Halo: Campaign Evolved system requirements look surprisingly reasonable, but Steam Machine owners may be worried
Halo Studios has revealed the official PC system requirements for Halo: Campaign Evolved, the upcoming Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved. The game is currently scheduled to launch on July 28, bringing Master Chief’s first adventure back with modern visuals, rebuilt environments, and the kind of presentation expected from a current-generation AAA release.
At first glance, the PC requirements are not as intimidating as some players may have expected. For a full remake built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, Halo: Campaign Evolved appears to be fairly manageable on mid-range and high-end gaming PCs. However, the requirements may be less encouraging for anyone considering Valve’s Steam Machine as their main gaming system.
For 4K gameplay at 60 FPS, Halo Studios recommends a strong but not outrageous setup. Players targeting this level of performance will need an AMD Ryzen 7 7700 or Intel Core i7-12700K processor, paired with a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti or Radeon RX 9070 graphics card. The studio also recommends 12 GB of VRAM, 32 GB of system memory, and 100 GB of SSD storage.
Those specs suggest Halo: Campaign Evolved will still demand capable hardware for ultra-sharp 4K performance, but it does not appear to require the absolute latest flagship PC components. That is a positive sign for players who already own a powerful gaming desktop or laptop from the last few years.
The more interesting part comes from the minimum requirements. To run Halo: Campaign Evolved at 1080p and 60 FPS on the Low preset, players will need an AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or Intel Core i7-10700K CPU, along with a GeForce RTX 2060 Super, Radeon RX 6600, or Intel Arc A580 GPU. The game also requires 16 GB of RAM and 8 GB of VRAM at minimum.
That is where things may become uncomfortable for Steam Machine users. Based on current performance expectations, the Steam Machine’s CPU may struggle to match the Ryzen 5 3600, while its GPU appears to sit around the same general performance class as the Radeon RX 6600. Since those parts are already listed as the baseline for 1080p at 60 FPS on Low settings, maintaining a stable frame rate could be a challenge.
This is especially disappointing when considering the Steam Machine is positioned as a modern gaming console-style PC with a starting price of $1,049. For that kind of money, many players will expect a device that can comfortably handle major releases for several years. If Halo: Campaign Evolved is already pushing it close to the minimum tier, that raises questions about long-term performance in future AAA games.
Players who were considering a Steam Machine primarily for big-budget PC gaming may want to compare it with gaming laptops or prebuilt desktops in the same price range. Depending on current deals, it may be possible to find systems with stronger graphics performance, better upgrade options, or a more balanced set of components for the money.
There is still some good news for lower-powered systems. Halo Studios has confirmed that Halo: Campaign Evolved will support multiple upscaling technologies at launch, including FSR, XeSS, DLSS, and TSR. These features should help players boost frame rates without completely sacrificing image quality, especially at 1080p and 1440p. Steam Machine owners in particular may benefit from FSR if native performance falls short.
Overall, the system requirements for Halo: Campaign Evolved suggest that Halo Studios has made a serious effort to optimize the remake across a wide range of PC hardware. The recommended specs for 4K are reasonable for a visually ambitious Unreal Engine 5 title, while the minimum specs give players a clear idea of what to expect at the entry level.
The biggest remaining question is how smoothly the game will run at launch. Unreal Engine 5 games can sometimes suffer from traversal stutter, shader compilation issues, or inconsistent frame pacing, even on powerful PCs. If Halo Studios manages to avoid those problems, Halo: Campaign Evolved could be one of the more polished major PC releases of the year.
For now, PC players with modern hardware have reason to be optimistic. Steam Machine users, however, may want to wait for real-world performance tests before jumping in.
