The tech giant Google is making strides in the travel industry by introducing a series of updates aimed at enhancing the travel planning process. With the anticipated summer holidays approaching, these advancements position Google as a key player in the sector, providing valuable insights into consumer behavior and purchasing patterns.
One of the most notable updates is the enhancement of its Search Generative Experience (SGE), which now empowers users to generate personalized travel itineraries and trip ideas through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This feature, currently offered in English to U.S. users partaking in Search Labs, utilizes a wealth of web-sourced information, user reviews, images, and more, to tailor travel suggestions across the globe.
When users request a specific travel plan, such as a historically oriented three-day journey to Philadelphia, Google will present a prototype itinerary. This itinerary is comprehensive, encompassing a range of attractions, dining venues, and even a general overview of flight and hotel options categorized by segments of the day.
Currently, this itinerary creation process serves as a planning tool only, without direct purchasing options. Once satisfied with the created travel schedule, users have the convenience of exporting it to various Google services like Gmail, Docs, or Maps for further refinement or use.
Google has not provided details on potential widespread release dates for this feature, leaving the travel industry to speculate about the extent of AI’s role in future services. Meanwhile, emerging businesses such as Mindtrip and Layla are already harnessing AI to offer travel assistance features.
Across the board, there is a mix of anticipation and caution from industry players regarding the impacts of generative AI on travel services. Google’s foray into this domain not only challenges these startups but also amasses valuable data on user preferences and travel purchasing intent, which is pivotal for its expansive advertising network.
Google has also upgraded Google Maps to facilitate easier discovery of recommended locations and activities in specific cities across the U.S. and Canada. Searches for cities within Maps will now return lists of suggestions, featuring insights from publishers and fellow users alike. In addition to these lists, users can explore curated selections of popular, trending, and under-the-radar restaurants in over 40 U.S. cities.
As part of its goal to streamline travel planning, Google has included tools that enable users to personalize the lists they create. This customization aspect allows for a more organized approach to travel preparation, whether for one’s own use or for sharing with friends and family. The lists can be sorted by personal preference or chronologically, similar to an itinerary, and users can link related content from their social media channels.
Google’s involvement in travel planning provides users with a seamless experience that leverages the capabilities of AI, while also keeping pace with consumer trends and preferences in the dynamic travel industry.
