Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, is under fire following the controversial launch of the company’s AI chatbot, Gemini, with calls for his resignation or dismissal arising from the AI’s failure to generate images of white people.
Gemini Sparks Outrage for Refusal to Display Images of White People
Initially featured with much excitement as Bard, Google’s rebranded AI chatbot Gemini has stumbled out of the gate, provoking a wave of discontent. The AI’s refusal to generate images of white people, contrary to its responses for other racial groups, has spurred intense reactions. The situation has led to speculation that Sundar Pichai could be pushed out of his role due to the bot’s disappointing performance.
Marketed as an AI leap forward, Gemini was supposed to deliver a cutting-edge chatbot experience. Nonetheless, when Fox News Digital requested images of a white person, Gemini declined, stressing the importance of not reducing individuals to a singular image based on race. Yet, when prompted for an image of a black person, Gemini initially balked but subsequently provided images celebrating black diversity and achievement. However, repeated requests for images of white individuals were again denied.
In response to the pushback, Google temporarily suspended the chatbot’s image generation feature and apologized. Prabhakar Raghavan, the company’s senior vice president, regretted the offensive outputs and highlighted the critical role of feedback in overcoming these challenges.
Allegations of Political Bias in Gemini’s Responses
Beyond the racial image generation issue, Google’s AI has confronted accusations of political bias, providing skewed responses regarding global political figures such as India’s Narendra Modi, the United States’ Donald Trump, and Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The biased remarks have reportedly prompted India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to consider a formal notice to Google concerning Gemini’s prejudiced outputs.
The debacle has shone a spotlight on possible lapses in Google’s AI development and quality assurance protocols. However, there are signs that Gemini is swiftly advancing, as it has begun to generate images of white people at the time this article was composed. It may be only a matter of time before Google properly calibrates Gemini to handle a wide range of queries without unintended bias.
