Last year, Google unveiled a new AI-powered digital assistant and chatbot named Bard, which initially made its appearance with the Pixel 8 series launch in October and had a presence on the web. Google has now decided to rename Bard to Gemini and is expanding its availability to Android users, as well as those on iOS and the web. As of now, users of Galaxy smartphones and tablets in the U.S. can experience what Google Gemini has to offer.
Introducing Google Gemini: The Evolved Digital Assistant
Google has made Gemini accessible to Android users through the Play Store, where it is available as a standalone app for both smartphones and tablets, though its rollout is limited to select countries. For iOS users, Gemini is integrated within the Google Search app, allowing an omnipresent experience without the need for a separate application.
Android users can swiftly access Gemini by long pressing the power button, swiping from the lower corners of the screen, or by voice activation with “Hey Google”. The assistant pops up in an overlay window, enabling users to type or speak their questions, and even add images to provide additional context as needed. With its integration into various Google services including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive, and others, Gemini can pull data from your personal accounts, offering summaries of emails or documents, as well as creating content such as social media posts and customized wallpapers based on user requests. Gemini’s understanding of context allows users to engage in more fluid and follow-up interactions.
Expanding Horizons: Google Gemini’s Future Availability
Google is beginning to transition away from its traditional Google Assistant towards its new AI offering, Gemini, signaling a shift to more advanced smart home capabilities. Users can opt-in to Gemini, which currently requires at least 4GB of RAM and Android 12 to function. Initially available in English within the U.S., there are plans for expansion to include Japanese and Korean language support. A broader rollout to European countries and additional languages is anticipated soon.
Google envisions Gemini as a step in the evolution of AI assistants, aiming to provide a conversational, helpful, and multimodal experience. “Multimodal” indicates Gemini’s ability to understand and process various forms of media, such as text and images, simultaneously, offering comprehensive responses and insights based on combined input.
As Google moves towards realizing its ambition of creating the ultimate AI assistant, users can expect more sophisticated interaction and seamless integration across their digital lives with Gemini.
