Google to Introduce Gemini Chatbot Access for Kids Under 13

Next week, Google is set to introduce its Gemini chatbot to children under 13 who have parent-managed Google accounts. This decision aligns with Google’s commitment to providing safe digital experiences for young users through its Family Link service, which allows families to manage and oversee their child’s access to various Google offerings.

According to reports, Gemini will offer a tailored experience for young users, incorporating specific safety measures to ensure a secure interaction. Importantly, Google has stated that any data collected from these interactions will not be used to train its AI systems.

This move highlights the competitive race among tech companies to engage younger audiences with AI technologies, even as the capabilities of chatbots continue to evolve. However, the rollout comes amidst ongoing discussions about the potential risks associated with AI. Last year, the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization urged governments to regulate generative AI in education, advocating for age restrictions and robust data protection measures.
