Google Search is rolling out a new feature called Audio Overviews, designed to enhance your search experience by offering a convenient, hands-free way to absorb information. This innovation, introduced to NotebookLM, Google’s AI-powered note-taking and research assistant, uses the latest Gemini models to provide audio summaries of search queries.
The idea behind Audio Overviews is to offer a lay of the land, making it particularly helpful for multitaskers or those who simply prefer an auditory learning style. This feature is now available in Labs, Google’s experimental environment. When Google identifies that an audio summary might benefit your search, you’ll see an option to generate a concise Audio Overview. Once activated, a straightforward audio player will appear, complete with play/pause controls, a volume button, and playback speed adjustments.
Google ensures transparency by displaying links in the audio player, indicating the information sources. If the audio piqued your curiosity, you can click on these links to explore the topic further. Users can also provide feedback with a thumbs up or down for each Audio Overview and the overall experiment in Labs.
This feature builds on the AI Overviews already offered by Google for some search queries, expanding its utility to those who learn better through audio or require more accessible information formats.
The introduction of Audio Overviews also aligns with features in NotebookLM, where users can generate AI-hosted podcasts based on shared documents like course readings or legal briefs. Meanwhile, Audio Overviews were integrated into Gemini earlier this year.
Interestingly, Google’s announcement follows a report indicating that their AI-powered tools might be impacting traffic for news publishers. Nonetheless, Audio Overviews aim to transform the way auditory learners and users access information, making search more adaptable and engaging.
