Google Demands $400 Fix After Pixel 9 Update Triggers Green Screen Lines

Google Pixel 9 users may have a new display problem to watch for, as reports are emerging of green lines appearing on OLED screens after a recent software update. The issue, which has affected various Android phones over the years, can make an otherwise perfectly functional device look damaged and distracting to use.

According to a Pixel 9 owner on Reddit, their phone developed visible green lines across the display after installing the May 2026 security update on Android 16. The user said the device had not been dropped or physically damaged, and the screen issue appeared only after the update was completed.

When the owner contacted Google support, they were initially told that the Pixel 9 was no longer covered under warranty. The available options were reportedly a paid repair costing around $400 or purchasing a new phone with a 20 percent discount coupon offered by Google.

Instead of accepting those options, the Pixel 9 owner pushed for a goodwill replacement. They explained that the device had been working normally before the security patch and continued to insist that the green line defect was not caused by accidental damage. The user also documented the problem carefully and requested that the case be reviewed by a specialist.

After several chats and email exchanges, Google eventually approved what was described as a “special exemption replacement” through its standard exchange process. This suggests that, at least in this specific case, Google was willing to make an exception even though the phone was outside its warranty period.

Green line problems on OLED and AMOLED displays are not new. These issues can sometimes appear after software updates, especially when a phone becomes very hot during installation. Excessive heat may weaken internal display connections or expose an existing hardware weakness, resulting in vertical green lines on the screen.

At this stage, it is not clear whether the May 2026 Android 16 security update is directly responsible for the Pixel 9 display issue. It is also unknown how many Pixel 9 owners are affected or whether this is an isolated case.

For now, Pixel 9 users who notice green lines after an update should document the issue immediately with photos and videos, contact Google support, and explain whether the phone has suffered any physical damage. If the standard support response does not help, asking for a specialist review may improve the chances of getting a better resolution.

The situation is worth watching closely, especially because display repairs can be expensive and green line defects can seriously affect daily use. If more Pixel 9 owners report the same problem after the same update, Google may face increased pressure to investigate whether a wider hardware or software-related display issue is involved.
