GMKtec has introduced two new budget-friendly mini PCs aimed at users who want compact desktop performance without paying premium prices. The new NucBox M5 Ultra leads the lineup with an AMD Ryzen 7 7730U processor, while the more affordable NucBox M5S offers an entry-level option powered by the AMD Ryzen 3 5400U.
The GMKtec NucBox M5 Ultra is designed for everyday productivity, home office setups, light creative work, media streaming, and compact workstation use. Its Ryzen 7 7730U chip is based on AMD’s Zen 3 architecture and features 8 cores and 16 threads, giving it enough power for multitasking, office applications, web browsing, video playback, and even some lighter gaming workloads. The processor can boost up to 4.5 GHz and includes integrated Radeon graphics running at up to 2.0 GHz.
For buyers who need a simpler and cheaper mini PC, the GMKtec NucBox M5S uses the Ryzen 3 5400U. This chip is also based on AMD Zen 3 technology, but it is positioned as a more affordable solution for basic computing tasks such as browsing, document editing, online meetings, streaming, and running lightweight apps.
One of the most appealing features of both mini PCs is upgradeability. The NucBox M5 Ultra and NucBox M5S include two DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM slots, allowing users to install up to 64 GB of RAM. This makes the systems more flexible than many compact desktops that ship with soldered memory.
Storage expansion is also generous for a small PC. Both models include two M.2 2280 SSD slots. GMKtec says each slot can support up to 8 TB, meaning users can theoretically install up to 16 TB of internal storage. That gives these compact systems room to handle large media libraries, work files, applications, and backups.
GMKtec will sell the NucBox M5 Ultra with configurations of up to 32 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. Users who prefer to choose their own memory and SSDs can also buy barebones versions without RAM or storage included.
Connectivity is another strong point. Both mini PCs come with dual 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet ports, making them useful for faster wired networking, home servers, office environments, and network-attached storage setups. Wireless connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, giving users modern options for fast internet access and wireless peripherals.
The display output options are especially useful for productivity-focused users. The NucBox M5 Ultra and NucBox M5S can support up to three displays through HDMI, DisplayPort, and USB Type-C. They can also handle resolutions up to 8K, making them suitable for high-resolution monitors, multi-screen office setups, digital signage, or entertainment centers.
For ports, GMKtec includes two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports, two USB 2.0 Type-A ports, and a USB-C port with 10 Gbps data transfer support. The USB-C port also supports 100 W Power Delivery output. The systems are powered through USB-C at 19 V / 3.42 A.
Cooling is handled by a dual-fan system, which should help maintain performance in the compact chassis. Mini PCs often struggle with heat under sustained workloads, so the addition of two fans may give these models better thermal stability during extended use.
Pricing starts at $270 for the barebones GMKtec NucBox M5S, while the more powerful NucBox M5 Ultra starts at $300 in barebones form. With AMD Zen 3 processors, upgradeable RAM and storage, dual 2.5 GbE networking, Wi-Fi 6E, triple-display support, and compact designs, the new GMKtec mini PCs could be attractive options for users looking for an affordable small-form-factor desktop.
