Major Chinese cloud service providers are stepping up their game in the global AI market, with tech giants like Huawei and Tencent channeling significant resources into AI infrastructure worldwide.
Chinese AI Firms Eye Global Expansion, Challenging American Counterparts
China’s AI firms, already dominant at home, are now setting their sights on the global stage, a move that undoubtedly raises eyebrows in the U.S. According to a report by the Taiwan Economic Daily, the cloud service divisions of companies like Alibaba, Huawei, and Tencent are gearing up to compete internationally. Armed with advanced AI models and promising hardware alternatives to Western solutions, these firms are positioned for a strong entry into the global cloud sector.
The development of AI infrastructure is a priority for many governments, with companies such as NVIDIA and Huawei eager to tap into the influx of funding expected in this area. Alibaba Cloud, for instance, has earmarked over 400 million yuan to fast-track its global AI expansion, boasting data centers in more than 29 regions beyond China. Chinese cloud service providers hold a strong presence in Asia, especially in countries like Malaysia, Thailand, and the Gulf states. Despite being outpaced by Big Tech in terms of capital expenditure, these Chinese firms focus heavily on engineering innovation.
Take Alibaba’s Qwen2.5-Max, for example, which competes head-to-head with OpenAI and Anthropic in various benchmark tests, despite seemingly having less advanced AI hardware. Similarly, DeepSeek’s R1 and its forthcoming R2 large language models are touted as formidable rivals to Western AI technologies. Although currently lagging behind the U.S. in hardware capabilities, Chinese companies like Huawei are pushing to extend their influence in nearby regions, already deploying their Ascend chips in places like Malaysia.
The march of Chinese AI firms into global markets signals escalating competition for American cloud service providers, particularly in strategic regions like the Middle East, where both the U.S. and China seek to assert their influence.
