Genshin Impact Luna VIII Update Brings Sandrone, the Frost Moon, and a New Cryo-Electro Reaction
Genshin Impact is preparing for one of its most ambitious updates yet, as Version Luna VIII, titled “Song of the Welkin Moon: Scherzo – Sunny Summer Fontinalia,” is set to launch on July 1 across supported platforms. The update introduces a major new explorable region beyond Teyvat, the long-awaited return of Sandrone, a fresh elemental reaction, new events, outfits, rewards, and gameplay improvements.
One of the biggest highlights of the Luna VIII update is the return of Sandrone, the Seventh of the Fatui Harbingers. After her dramatic sacrifice during the intense battle of Nod-Krai, many players were left wondering whether her story had truly ended. Now, Sandrone is back, and her mysterious resurrection is expected to play a major role in the new storyline.
Sandrone joins the playable roster as a 5-star Cryo Claymore character. Her combat style revolves around a new mechanic called Stellar-Conduct, a Cryo-Electro reaction that adds another layer of strategy to team-building. When certain Cryo and Electro characters trigger this reaction, they create a temporary Polestar Field. This field stores excess Cryo and Electro energy, then converts it into powerful buffs for the party.
Inside the Polestar Field, characters can deal increased Stellar-Conduct damage, while Cryo and Electro damage are also boosted. Enemies caught within the field will suffer reduced Physical Resistance, making it easier for players to deal heavy damage with the right team setup. Some existing Cryo and Electro characters will also receive unique enhancements while fighting inside the field, giving older characters new potential in future team compositions.
Sandrone’s abilities are built around controlling the battlefield with Fagio, her fully autonomous construct. Fagio attacks enemies with Stellar-Conduct damage through Charged Attacks while building up Decoding Power. If Fagio reaches its firing limit, its attack intervals become longer, so players will need to manage its output carefully. Sandrone’s Elemental Skill allows her to move through the Polestar Field while firing at enemies, reducing Decoding Power and preventing Fagio from overloading. Her Elemental Burst unleashes a barrage of artillery fire, and beam damage dealt within the Polestar Field counts as Stellar-Conduct damage.
Sandrone will debut during the first half of the Version Luna VIII Character Event Wishes alongside a rerun for Citlali. The second half of the update will feature the return of Columbina and Raiden Shogun, giving players several highly anticipated banner options throughout the version.
Beyond new characters and combat systems, the Luna VIII update expands the world of Genshin Impact in a major way. Players will board a spacecraft and travel beyond the skies of Teyvat to reach the Frost Moon, a permanent new area filled with strange landscapes, ancient mysteries, and stunning cosmic scenery.
The Frost Moon offers locations unlike anything currently found in Teyvat. Players can explore a glowing but dangerous lunar sea, visit a space station suspended in outer space, and look back at Teyvat as it rotates silently in the distance. The region also contains ancient ruins tied to the history of the dragon race, promising new lore for players who enjoy uncovering the deeper secrets of Genshin Impact’s world.
Exploration on the Frost Moon will also introduce new movement mechanics. A mysterious ancient power spread across the lunar surface allows players to cross different terrain types and manipulate local gravity. This should make traversal feel fresh and distinct from previous regions. To improve navigation, both the Frost Moon and Teyvat maps will receive a layered display feature that shows the player’s current level in real time, making it easier to explore complex vertical environments.
The update also brings a festive seasonal event to Fontaine. The Fontinalia Film Festival will take place aboard the Wingalet, where Charlotte, Citlali, and several familiar characters gather for a midsummer water festival. Sandrone will also join the voyage, while Columbina arrives with a film crew for a special shoot.
This event story will become permanent, allowing players to experience it even after the main event period has ended. During the festival, players can help manage the ship’s aquarium, attract visitors, and take part in the celebration. After completing the event, players will be able to invite Charlotte to their party for free and unlock a new outfit for her. Citlali will also receive a new outfit, which will be available at a limited-time discount.
Additional activities are coming in Version Luna VIII as well. Players can join a dance challenge in Natlan, discover new music pieces in the Repertoire of Myriad Melodies, and try fresh cards in Genius Invokation TCG. These additions give the update a strong mix of story content, combat, exploration, and casual side activities.
Miliastra Wonderland is also getting a summer refresh. The area will receive a new summer-themed lobby along with seasonal outfits. By completing activities, players can earn free rewards, including Prismatic Crystals and an elegant 4-star set. For players who enjoy creating custom experiences, the Editor will receive useful upgrades and new environment assets, opening the door to more interactive gameplay designs and richer visual creations.
Genshin Impact is currently available on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Android, and iOS, with a Nintendo Switch version still planned. With Sandrone’s arrival, the debut of the Frost Moon, the new Stellar-Conduct reaction, and a packed festival in Fontaine, Version Luna VIII looks set to be a major update for both longtime players and newcomers looking for a reason to return to Teyvat.
