Gears of War: E-Day Reveals a Brutal Origin Story for Marcus and Dom
Gears of War: E-Day is taking the series back to the moment everything changed. Xbox Game Studios and The Coalition have shared a fresh look at the upcoming prequel’s campaign, putting the spotlight on Emergence Day, the catastrophic event that unleashed the Locust Horde and plunged humanity into a war for survival.
Set 14 years before the original Gears of War, the game follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago in a darker, more personal origin story. Longtime fans will get to see the early days of their brotherhood, while new players can experience the beginning of the conflict without needing to know every detail of the franchise’s history.
The campaign focuses on the horror, confusion, and overwhelming violence of the Locust invasion. As the enemy rises from beneath the surface, cities collapse, soldiers scramble to respond, and ordinary life is torn apart in an instant. The Coalition is leaning into a grittier tone this time, aiming to make the Locust feel terrifying again rather than just familiar battlefield opponents.
Gears of War: E-Day is built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5, giving the prequel a more cinematic and immersive presentation. Environments are designed to feel more grounded and dangerous, with improved lighting, atmosphere, destruction, and detail helping bring the chaos of Emergence Day to life. The game is targeting 4K resolution and up to 60FPS across campaign and multiplayer, with modern visual features such as HDR10 and hardware ray-traced lighting, reflections, and shadows.
Classic Gears combat is also returning, but with a more modern feel. The signature cover-based gameplay remains at the center of every firefight, while updated movement and traversal add more freedom. Players can jump, vault, slide, and flank more naturally, creating faster and more tactical battles without losing the heavy, brutal identity the series is known for.
Fan-favorite weapons are coming back with refreshed designs, joined by new tools made for intense close-quarters combat. The Locust themselves are being reimagined to feel more threatening, and they will be joined by new creatures and villains meant to restore the franchise’s sense of fear and survival horror.
Beyond the campaign, Gears of War: E-Day brings back cooperative and competitive multiplayer. Horde Siege is described as an evolved version of the iconic PvE wave survival mode, now built for larger maps, bigger battles, and more players. In this mode, squads will defend a city under siege while completing shared objectives and taking on powerful world bosses.
Players can choose from four classes: Assault, Marksman, Medic, and Breacher. Each role is built to support a different combat style, encouraging squads to work together as they fight through waves of Locust. Surviving matches will earn rewards, unlock customization options, and help improve loadouts for future runs.
Versus PvP also returns with a more focused approach. The game will feature all-new maps alongside refined 4v4 modes designed for both competitive and casual players. Ranked playlists will let players climb the ladder, while Social playlists offer a more relaxed way to jump into matches. With modernized movement and controls, Versus aims to feel smoother while still keeping the tense, cover-heavy combat that defines Gears multiplayer.
On PC, Gears of War: E-Day will offer a wide range of customization and performance options. Players can expect support for borderless, exclusive, and windowed display modes, uncapped frame rates on capable hardware, ultrawide support for 21:9 and 32:9 displays, and full keyboard, mouse, and controller remapping.
The PC version will also include advanced performance features such as NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR “Redstone,” optional Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation on supported hardware, Variable Rate Shading, and a built-in benchmark mode. These features are designed to help players fine-tune the game for both visual quality and smoother performance.
Gears of War: E-Day is also being optimized for handheld play, including Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices. Optional account linking will allow players to carry progress through roaming saves, connect with friends, send cross-platform invites, and team up across supported platforms.
With its darker campaign, rebuilt visuals, expanded Horde Siege mode, refined Versus multiplayer, and modern PC features, Gears of War: E-Day is shaping up to be both a return to the franchise’s roots and a major step forward for the series.
Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6 for Windows PC through Steam and the Microsoft Store, as well as Xbox Series X|S.
