Garmin’s Latest Stable Update Squashes a Music App Bug

Garmin is rolling out a fresh stable update for its Approach S44 and Approach S50 golf smartwatches, bringing a set of practical fixes aimed at making on-course features and everyday usability more reliable. The new release, System Software 8.04, arrives roughly three months after the previous stable update (version 7.16), which focused on an activity data handling issue.

This latest Garmin Approach S44 and Approach S50 update includes four key bug fixes, with improvements targeting both golf tools and the built-in music experience.

One of the most noticeable golf-related fixes is aimed specifically at the Approach S50. Garmin says it has resolved a problem affecting PlaysLike mode where the toggle on the hazards and layups screen wasn’t working the way it should. For golfers who rely on quick, accurate adjustments during a round, this should make the S50’s PlaysLike interface feel more dependable.

Garmin also addressed an issue that affected both the Approach S44 and S50 involving PlaysLike distance when paired with a linked rangefinder. If you use a compatible rangefinder alongside your watch, this fix is designed to ensure the PlaysLike distance data is received and handled correctly.

Another fix focuses on course accuracy. The update corrects a bug that could cause the watch to display incorrect hole and par information for a golf course—an important improvement for anyone tracking performance, scoring, or shot strategy.

Finally, System Software 8.04 patches a music-related issue that prevented users from adjusting volume inside the Approach smartwatch music app. If you’ve been stuck with limited audio control during workouts or while on the course, this update should restore normal volume adjustment.

According to Garmin, System Software 8.04 is now available for all Approach S44 and Approach S50 users. You can install it through the Garmin Golf app or by using Garmin Express on a computer.
