Garmin’s Focus Remains on Smartwatches Over Smart Rings

Garmin, known for its high-end smartwatches, has made it clear that it is not planning to jump into the market for smart rings anytime soon. Despite the growing popularity of health and fitness tracking rings like the Amazfit Helio and Samsung Galaxy Ring, Garmin’s leadership team holds a firm belief in the superiority of smartwatches over rings.

During the Garmin Health Summit 2024 in Prague, Joe Schrick, Garmin’s Vice President of Fitness, and Scott Burgett, Senior Director of Health Engineering, discussed why the company is steering clear of smart rings. They acknowledged that the only real benefit of smart rings is the convenience of 24/7 activity tracking in a minimal form. However, they noted that this comes with significant trade-offs in terms of data accuracy and precision.

Smartwatches, according to Garmin, have the edge due to their larger size, which accommodates more advanced sensors and LEDs. This, in turn, offers a better signal-to-noise ratio and more accurate health data. Additionally, Garmin’s smartwatches boast better battery life compared to smart rings, which typically require charging after about a week.

Another factor in Garmin’s decision is profitability. High-end smartwatches are currently more lucrative than their smart ring counterparts. Garmin seems content to stick with its successful smartwatch line for the time being, as the company continues to focus on providing consumers with reliable, precise, and high-performance health-tracking devices.
