Black Myth: Wukong

Game Director Opposes AI Technologies in Gaming and Live Performances

The dynamic world of gaming continuously evolves, yet the contentious debate on AI’s role in the creative process remains fiercely alive. Beth Parker, the vibrant lead performance director behind the acclaimed action-adventure game, Black Myth: Wukong, recently shared her candid views on this subject during an exchange with the BAFT Breakthrough 2024 cohort.

Parker expressed her skepticism towards the integration of AI in game development, particularly concerning voice work and character interactions. Her conviction is rooted in the belief that AI fails to capture “human, chaotic emotion.” While AI can mimic vocal intonation, it lacks the genuine emotional depth that makes storytelling resonate with players. “And I think that matters,” Parker passionately argued. The immersive experience of a game often hinges on the player’s investment in its narrative and world. Thus, she sees the possible exclusion of authentic human elements as a diminishing factor in a game’s intimacy and impact.

Within the broader creative industry, the controversy over replacing humans with AI is an ongoing saga, stretching from gaming to publishing, and even Hollywood. Proponents of AI highlight cost efficiency as a major incentive for its adoption. However, critics like Parker and noted filmmaker Michael Bay counter this argument by emphasizing the loss of quality and individuality in AI-generated content.

Aligning with this sentiment, a September YouGov study revealed a strong opposition among gamers to the replacement of human creators with AI. An astounding 65% advocated for banning game companies from substituting actors without consent, and 77% were against replacing storywriters with AI solutions. Only a small 19% conceded that AI might, at times, outperform human creativity.

Reaffirming her commitment to authentic human craftsmanship, Parker concluded her remarks by vowing that no element of Black Myth: Wukong she was involved with employed AI, and she is unlikely to change this approach in the future. This beloved game, available since August 2024, invites players into its captivating realm on platforms like Microsoft Windows via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as PS5, with an upcoming release on Xbox Series X|S.
