In the heart of Yemen, Mohammed has embedded himself as a beacon of hope through “Power Net,” an internet café dedicated to the dual cause of gaming and education. Resilient in the face of Yemen’s harsh realities, including persistent power outages and economic challenges, Mohammed’s Power Net stands as a testament to perseverance and community spirit.
Initially launched to provide local youth with a safe space for entertainment, Power Net has evolved into a pivotal educational resource offering free STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) classes. For many in the region, where educational opportunities are limited, these classes represent a rare chance to dream bigger and pursue futures in tech and science. Mohammed often delights in celebrating these budding scholars’ achievements, proudly sharing moments of students holding their STEM certificates with the world.
However, running the internet café is no small feat. Mohammed routinely battles power cuts, relying heavily on diesel generators—a costly and maintenance-heavy solution exacerbated by soaring diesel prices. His computers, largely equipped with core i5 4th generation processors and 8GB RAM, barely meet the demands of modern games like Counter-Strike and Grand Theft Auto V on the lowest settings. Yet, the inconsistent electricity supply has taken a toll, with frequent power cycles causing hardware issues, such as malfunctioning GPUs.
Despite these formidable hurdles, Mohammed’s story has captured global attention, especially on social media platforms. After sharing his experiences online, Mohammed received an overwhelming outpouring of support from individuals worldwide. Contributions in the form of UPS devices, solar power suggestions, and computer hardware such as DDR3 RAMs have revitalized the café, reinforcing Mohammed’s mission.
Power Net is more than just an Internet café—it’s a sanctuary of learning and a symbol of resilience and innovation for young Yemeni minds. For those interested in supporting Mohammed’s endeavor, a GoFundMe campaign has been established by a friend in the US. Although the platform isn’t available directly in Yemen, donations are safely transferred to Mohammed’s Western Union account. The campaign has garnered over $11,000, signaling a global community’s investment in these young learners’ futures.
Mohammed’s efforts continue to illustrate the power of one individual’s passion to foster change and inspire a community, transforming what was once a simple idea into a lifeline for many underprivileged young people in Yemen.
