An official from the state of Telangana has revealed that the newly constructed Foxconn manufacturing facility near Hyderabad is on track to begin its first production run, rumored to include the manufacturing of Apple’s AirPods, as soon as August. This follows initial reports in August 2023 that indicated Foxconn’s plans to mass-produce AirPods in India by the end of 2024.
The Taiwan-based electronics manufacturer has made considerable strides in setting up its facility in India, with the recent completion of two production lines at the Hyderabad plant. This establishment represents Foxconn’s initial foray into audio device manufacturing for Apple within Indian borders, having previously focused on iPhone production in the country.
Demonstrating a remarkable speed of execution, the Hyderabad plant’s construction was completed in just one and a half years—significantly under the estimated timeline of two and a half years. Vishnu Reddy, Telangana’s special secretary to the Investment Promotion & NRI Affairs, emphasized this expeditious development as a distinguishing feature of the Hyderabad ecosystem. He attributed the speedy delivery to the effective coordination between the company and state authorities, including land allocation, regulatory approvals, and financial closures.
During an interview, Mr. Reddy did not confirm whether the products to be manufactured are specifically Apple’s AirPods. As a contract manufacturer, Foxconn is associated with different brands, and their client relationships are considered internal matters. However, the success of this initiative is evident in the eagerness and positive attitude of Foxconn regarding the development timeline.
Furthermore, the speed with which Telangana has delivered on manufacturing projects is not unprecedented. Reddy cited the Boeing and Tata Electronics collaboration in Hyderabad as a prime example, where the first Apache fuselage part was produced within 11 months of the groundbreaking.
Adding to Telangana’s industrial progression, the state delegation, which includes Mr. Reddy, is visiting Taiwan to explore additional investment opportunities. They have participated in the COMPUTEX 2024 event and held meetings with prominent Taiwanese companies such as Pegatron, Wistron, and Viewsonic to discuss potential manufacturing investments in the state. Additionally, Reddy mentioned conversations with Indian firms considering partnership with MicroLED manufacturer PlayNitride for a semiconductor venture under the Indian Semiconductor Mission.
Investment in the manufacturing sector is a crucial aspect of Telangana’s economic development strategy. Anticipation for the upcoming production at the Foxconn Hyderabad plant is high, as it signifies not only the state’s growing industrial capabilities but also the potential for significant job creation, with estimates suggesting employment opportunities for 25,000 people as a result of the US$500 million investment made by Foxconn in the region.
