Fossil, a well-known entity in the Wear OS smartwatch market, has announced its intention to depart from the smartwatch sector. Once a pioneering brand with the launch of its initial Wear OS device, Fossil has been a significant player for several years. However, their recent confirmation suggests a complete halt in the production of new smartwatch models.
The news follows a period of anticipation from consumers eager to discover the next line-up of Fossil smartwatches, as well as updates for current models. Despite hopes for an eventual release of Wear OS 4 for Fossil’s smartwatches, a Fossil spokesperson, Amanda Castelli, has clarified that the choice to stop smartwatch production is deliberate and based on changes in the smartwatch market. She expressed that the shifting dynamics have led Fossil to refocus its strategy and resources.
According to Fossil, the Gen 6 series will represent the last of its smartwatch offerings. Nonetheless, Castelli assures that the brand is committed to supporting and updating their existing smartwatches over the next few years. Whether this support includes more than just security and stability updates remains uncertain, as the prospects for a Wear OS 4 update now seem bleak. Fossil’s watches were updated to Wear OS 3.5 previously.
Fossil Refocuses on Traditional Offerings Post-Smartwatch Era
Although unexpected for some, Fossil’s exit from the smartwatch market was already being speculated as of December 2023. Conversations among Reddit users hinted at the company’s lack of plans for a Gen 7 smartwatch, citing conversations with Fossil retail employees, while others suggested that Fossil might have been awaiting a new chipset.
Moving forward, Fossil will allocate its efforts toward its more traditional products. Prior to their venture into smartwatches, Fossil was primarily recognized for its leather items, conventional watches, and jewelry. It appears the brand will now revive its focus in these areas, aiming to introduce new products that resonate with their established strengths.
Fossil’s exit marks the end of a notable era in Wear OS device production, where the company offered an array of options under various brands, including Diesel and Michael Kors. This departure could lead to a reduction in the diversity of Wear OS options available unless other manufacturers step up to fill the gap.
For those seeking viable smartwatch alternatives, models such as the Galaxy Watch 6 are recommended for their integration of Wear OS 4 right from the start. Moreover, it’s speculated that this particular model could receive future major updates sooner than other competitors in the market.
