Rockstar Games rarely speaks openly about what’s happening behind the scenes, especially with a project as massive as Grand Theft Auto VI. Still, a new detail has surfaced from an unexpected place: a UK employment tribunal case that includes internal chat logs and workplace discussions. Among the many messages referenced in the dispute is a remark from a former employee that suggests at least some staff were uneasy about how generative AI might be used inside the studio.
What the UK tribunal revealed about Rockstar Games
The situation comes from a legal battle involving more than 30 former Rockstar employees who are seeking lost wages after being terminated for what the company described as “gross misconduct.” Evidence reviewed in the proceeding includes logs from a Discord server associated with the Independent Workers of Great Britain (IWGB), a union-connected community where employees discussed workplace issues.
The former employees argue that the server was mainly used to talk about working conditions and job-related frustrations. Rockstar, however, claims the conversations went too far and crossed confidentiality lines, allegedly exposing sensitive information about GTA 6 and internal operations.
According to the evidence discussed, one message referenced a potential GTA 6 feature: a 32-player multiplayer mode. Even so, a large portion of the chat reportedly focused less on game details and more on criticism of workplace conditions and leadership decisions.
A former employee’s generative AI comment stands out
Buried among the messages was one line that caught attention because it touched on generative AI and what management might approve. In a message dated February 20, 2025, a former employee appeared to respond to an office memo by saying: “I would both love and hate to know what uses of gen AI legal have approved.”
That single sentence hints at uncertainty—and possibly anxiety—about what role AI tools could play in a major game studio. It also reflects a wider industry trend: as big publishers invest heavily in AI, many game developers worry that parts of their jobs could be reduced, reshaped, or replaced.
Generative AI has already been discussed as a way to speed up quality assurance, assist with debugging, or support production tasks that don’t require the same level of creative decision-making. It can also be used to generate certain types of assets, potentially lowering the need for some outsourced or entry-level work. Even if a company’s official stance is that AI will only be used for “basic” tasks, employees may still fear that the scope could expand over time.
How GTA 6 could use AI without replacing creativity
Public comments from top leadership have generally suggested caution about AI replacing human creators. The message from executives has been that technology should help teams work more efficiently, not take over the core creative process that defines a Rockstar game.
In practical terms, that could mean AI-driven tools that streamline production workflows or improve testing rather than generating storylines, building cities, or crafting missions. For a game like GTA 6—known for detail, polish, and handcrafted worldbuilding—many fans expect that human-led creative work will remain central.
At the same time, AI and machine learning could show up in other areas that players might notice directly, such as more realistic NPC behavior, smarter traffic patterns, improved crowd reactions, or more adaptive world systems. Those uses don’t necessarily replace writers, artists, or designers, but they can enhance immersion and make the game world feel more alive.
More details could emerge as the case continues
Because the tribunal involved extensive documentation, more information about Rockstar’s development culture or GTA 6 production methods could surface, even if unintentionally. Rockstar is famously protective of its projects, but once material is entered into legal records, controlling what becomes public can get much harder.
For now, the takeaway is clear: while executives may publicly downplay generative AI as a creative force in GTA 6, at least one former employee’s messages suggest the subject was already sparking concern internally—exactly the kind of tension the wider game industry is grappling with right now.
