Ford Transit City Electric Van Promises 2,800-Lb Payload and Lower Running Costs for Urban Fleets
Ford is expanding its electric commercial vehicle lineup with the Transit City, a compact electric cargo van designed for businesses that need strong payload capacity, efficient city driving, and reduced maintenance costs. Built with urban delivery routes and daily commercial use in mind, the new electric van aims to give fleet operators and self-employed professionals a practical alternative to diesel-powered cargo vans.
At the heart of the Ford Transit City is a 110-kW electric motor, producing around 148 horsepower and sending power to the front wheels. The motor is paired with a 56 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, also known as an LFP battery. This type of battery is known for durability, long service life, and stability, making it especially suitable for commercial vehicles that face frequent stop-and-go driving and daily heavy use.
The Transit City offers a combined WLTP driving range of 158 miles, which should be enough for many urban delivery routes, tradespeople, and service businesses. For city-focused driving, Ford says the electric van can travel up to 237 miles on a single charge, depending on conditions and usage. That makes it a strong option for companies operating in low-emission zones or businesses looking to cut fuel expenses without sacrificing everyday practicality.
Charging has also been designed around commercial schedules. When connected to a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in about 33 minutes. This quick turnaround could allow drivers to top up during breaks or between delivery runs, helping keep downtime to a minimum.
One of the biggest advantages of the Ford Transit City electric cargo van is its potential to reduce operating costs. Electric powertrains have fewer moving parts than diesel engines and do not require components such as timing belts, clutches, or exhaust systems. Ford Pro estimates that maintenance costs could be around 40 percent lower compared with a similar diesel cargo van.
The longer service interval also supports business efficiency. The Transit City requires servicing every two years or 25,000 miles, which may help fleet operators reduce workshop visits and keep vehicles on the road for longer. Combined with lower energy costs per mile, the van is positioned as a cost-effective solution for companies that depend on reliable daily transportation.
