Foldable iPhone launch window reportedly pushed back again

The anticipated foldable iPhone from Apple, a device that has long been the subject of industry buzz and consumer curiosity, appears to have its launch timeline extended once again. According to insider information, the debut of the foldable iPhone, which is expected to feature a clamshell design, may now take place in the first quarter of 2027. This is a shift from the previously anticipated release in the last quarter of 2026.

Speculation about Apple’s entry into the foldable smartphone market has been circulating for years, with initial predictions placing the launch around 2020. These predictions moved to 2025 and, according to a purported Apple product roadmap, were later updated to 2026. However, the recent reports suggest another delay that pushes the launch to 2027.

In the meantime, there has been some redirection of resources within Apple, with members of an internal team, known colloquially as the Apple Vision Pro team, being tasked to focus on foldable technology. It’s been reported that Apple will introduce a foldable product in 2025, though it won’t be an iPhone but rather a new iPad model.

In a landscape where enthusiasts are eager to see a fusion of Apple’s rigorous design standards with the novel foldable form factor, it’s clear that the company is confronting challenges. Among these is securing a reliable supply of the parts necessary to manufacture a foldable iPhone. Discussions are reportedly ongoing between Apple and major display producers such as Samsung Display and LG Display. Notably, BOE, which has found success with its foldable displays in devices like the Vivo X Flip, was not mentioned as a potential supplier. This could be due to the competitive demand for foldable displays, as other smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Huawei are also releasing a flurry of foldable devices into the market.

The clamshell design, particularly, seems to be the direction in which Apple’s foldable iPhone concept is headed, reminiscent of devices such as the Galaxy Z Flip series. This has been demonstrated by the visions of tech enthusiasts who have even created mockups by amalgamating parts from various smartphones to envision what an Apple foldable phone might look like.

While fans of Apple products await official confirmation and further details about the foldable iPhone, it’s clear that the company is not rushing to market. Instead, they seem to be taking the time to ensure that any foldable device they release aligns with their well-established reputation for quality and innovation. As the smartphone market continues to embrace foldable technology, all eyes will remain on Apple to see how they eventually choose to participate in this evolving space.
