Sidephone first look: Android reimagined for a modern “dumb phone,” with pre-orders around the corner
A new 15-minute hands-on video shared on the r/sidephone subreddit gives the clearest look yet at the Sidephone’s repurposed Android experience. The minimalist handset, which drew buzz back in April 2025, is edging closer to launch, with pre-orders expected to open soon.
Running on a compact 2.8-inch display, the demo walks through a streamlined Android interface designed to keep essentials front and center. You can rearrange widgets, access familiar quick settings tiles, and browse a clean app drawer that focuses on the basics. Out of the box, the Sidephone includes:
– Camera
– Clock
– Contacts
– File explorer
– Gallery
– App Library
– Messaging
– Phone
– Settings
Each app has been tuned for the small touchscreen, with layouts and navigation that feel deliberate rather than cramped. Messaging functionality is intentionally simple at launch: SMS and MMS are supported, while RCS is not yet included.
One of the standout features is deep button remapping. The Sidephone supports a swappable keyboard system, and users can assign controls like play, pause, and track skipping to their preferred keys. The first 1,000 units will ship with a T9-style keypad. Additional options—a physical QWERTY layout and an MP3-style keypad—are slated to be available for pre-order toward the end of September.
Power users will appreciate the App Library. It serves as a hub to sideload and update Sidephone-ready apps, view permissions, and check technical details such as source code references. You can also scan QR codes to add repositories, making it easy to extend functionality with tools like GPS without bloating the core experience. A full, curated list of compatible apps is expected to be published in the coming weeks.
Typing on the small screen is supported by an on-screen QWERTY keyboard with autocorrect and predictive text to speed things up. In the demo, the T9 keyboard on that particular unit appeared glitchy, so most input was shown using the touchscreen keyboard.
Availability is coming into focus. The company has stated that:
– United States pre-orders are planned for mid-August, with the first batch targeting Fall 2025 delivery.
– Pre-orders for other regions are expected in Fall 2025, with shipments beginning in early 2026.
– As of August 27, the website didn’t yet show a pre-order button, but it’s expected to appear soon.
If you’ve been waiting for a distraction-light device that still taps into Android’s flexibility, the Sidephone’s first OS demo suggests a thoughtfully pared-back approach: essential apps, customizable hardware controls, and a controlled pathway to add just what you need—and nothing you don’t. Keep an eye on the project’s official channels and community updates as pre-orders roll out.
