Fans of Final Fantasy 9 were eagerly anticipating a remake announcement as the beloved RPG celebrates its 25th anniversary. Released in 2000 on the original PlayStation, this entry is often heralded as the franchise’s best. While Square Enix is marking the milestone with videos, artwork, and merchandise, hopes for a remake reveal have hit a snag.
A trustworthy insider, NateTheHate, recently dampened expectations by suggesting that plans for the remake might be in jeopardy. He noted on the ResetEra forums that although the project was still in development as of his last update, there were murmurs of possible cancellation a month ago.
Despite this uncertainty, fans remain hopeful. Final Fantasy 9 is accessible on modern platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo, allowing players to relive the nostalgia. However, many are yearning for an overhaul akin to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which enhanced open-world exploration and modernized both visuals and gameplay.
Speculation around a remake began in 2021 following an Nvidia GeForce Now leak that mentioned numerous Square Enix titles. While many games from that list have come to fruition, such as Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, the company has yet to affirm a Final Fantasy 9 remake.
Given Square Enix’s success with remakes and remasters, it seems likely that a revamped version of Final Fantasy 9 could still emerge in the future. However, enthusiasts might need to exercise some patience as they await further developments.
