In a significant advancement for diabetes management technology, the Dexcom Stelo has recently obtained FDA clearance in the United States as a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) available directly to consumers without the need for a prescription. The Stelo is set to make monitoring blood sugar levels more accessible, with an expected market release later in the year.
As the first FDA-cleared CGM of its type for over-the-counter (OTC) sales, Dexcom’s Stelo aims to empower particular demographics with the ability to monitor their blood glucose and evaluate how their lifestyle choices, such as diet and exercise, influence their levels.
The Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System provides insights by measuring blood sugar every 15 minutes and displaying this information through a corresponding smartphone app. Users simply attach the sensor to the back of their arm using an adhesive patch, and the device continues to function for up to 15 days before needing replacement. In addition to seeing their glucose levels, users can get personalized data on patterns and trends which could inform better health choices.
Although compatible with certain smartwatches for convenient data viewing, the Stelo isn’t intended for everyone. According to the FDA, it’s most suitable for adults over 18 who are not living with diabetes or those managing Type 2 diabetes through oral medications. This CGM is not recommended for insulin-dependent users and shouldn’t replace professional medical advice or care.
While the US market eagerly anticipates the launch of Dexcom Stelo this summer, cost details remain undisclosed. To give potential customers an idea of pricing, the current market price for a bundle of three Dexcom G7 Sensors is at $377.73 through Amazon Pharmacy.
As the Stelo prepares to enter the market, it could herald a new era of personal health management by making blood sugar level tracking more widely accessible and user-friendly.
