Far Cry 7 Rumored to Add Extraction Shooter Elements as Splinter Cell Remake Moves Forward
Ubisoft may be facing uncertainty behind the scenes, but two of its biggest franchises are reportedly still in active development. Fresh rumors suggest that the next Far Cry game and the long-awaited Splinter Cell Remake are moving ahead, with Far Cry 7 potentially taking the series in a bold new direction.
According to information shared by Ubisoft leaker Rogue | Tx on X, Far Cry 7 may introduce a major gameplay shift by adding extraction shooter mechanics. The game is described as featuring a “high-stakes PvEvP scavenge and extract survival loop,” which suggests players could be dropped into dangerous environments where they must gather resources, survive enemy threats, and escape before losing their progress.
If accurate, this would mark a significant change for the Far Cry franchise. The series has traditionally focused on open-world exploration, cinematic storytelling, chaotic combat, and villain-driven campaigns. While Far Cry has experimented with co-op and survival elements before, a dedicated extraction-style mode would be one of its biggest departures yet.
The rumor also claims that Far Cry 7 will still include a separate campaign. However, it remains unclear how the extraction shooter elements will connect to the main story, or whether the PvP components will be part of a standalone mode. Ubisoft could be attempting to modernize the franchise by blending its familiar open-world formula with more tense, replayable multiplayer-driven gameplay.
This reported direction may be part of a larger effort to refresh Far Cry after the mixed reception to recent entries. Extraction shooters have become increasingly popular due to their risk-and-reward structure, where every match can lead to valuable loot or major losses. Adding that kind of pressure to Far Cry’s open-world chaos could create a very different experience from previous games.
Meanwhile, the Splinter Cell Remake appears to be staying much closer to the identity of the original game. The project is reportedly being built on Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine and will feature a linear campaign rather than a large open-world structure. That approach should please longtime fans who have been hoping for a return to the stealth-focused design that made Splinter Cell stand out.
The remake is said to include expanded non-lethal options, dynamic lighting, destructible environments, and classic spy gear such as sticky cameras and gas grenades. These features suggest Ubisoft is aiming to modernize the original Splinter Cell while preserving its tactical stealth roots. Lighting and shadows have always been central to the series, so the use of newer technology could make sneaking through environments feel more immersive than ever.
As for a release window, the leaker claims the Splinter Cell Remake could arrive sometime between the second and fourth quarter of next year. However, Ubisoft has not officially confirmed that timeframe, and development plans can change quickly.
For now, both projects should be treated as unconfirmed until Ubisoft shares official details. Still, if the information is accurate, Far Cry 7 could represent a major reinvention for the long-running open-world shooter series, while Splinter Cell Remake may deliver the classic stealth experience fans have been waiting years to see return.
