Facebook Unveils Fresh AI Tools, Animated Profile Pics, and New Text-Post Backgrounds

Facebook is rolling out a fresh set of AI-powered updates aimed at making posts, photos, and profiles feel more playful and personal. The new features include animated profile pictures, AI-driven photo restyling for Stories and Memories, and animated backgrounds for text-based posts. Together, they’re designed to help people express themselves more creatively while making everyday content stand out in the feed.

These changes also reflect a bigger goal: keeping Facebook relevant for younger audiences. With Gen Z and other younger users often gravitating toward more visual, fast-moving social platforms, Facebook is leaning into personalization and AI tools to make self-expression feel quicker, trendier, and more fun.

One of the most eye-catching additions is animated profile pictures. Instead of swapping to a video or creating a complex design, users can take an existing still photo and apply motion effects that make the subject appear to wave, form a heart with their hands, or show up with playful virtual elements like a party hat. Facebook says the best results come from using a clear photo of a single person facing the camera. You can choose an image from your camera roll or use one already uploaded to Facebook, and more animation styles are expected to arrive throughout the year.

Facebook is also upgrading two of its most-used sharing formats: Stories and Memories. Stories are the short photo and video posts that disappear after 24 hours, while Memories resurfaces older content from the same date in previous years. The platform is adding a new option called Restyle, which uses Meta AI to transform the look and feel of a photo.

After you upload an image to Stories or choose a Memory you want to share, you can tap Restyle and either type your own prompt or choose from preset styles. The built-in themes include looks like anime, illustrated, glowy, ethereal, and more. Beyond picking a style, you can also fine-tune the vibe by adjusting mood, lighting, and colors, or change the setting entirely by swapping in new backgrounds such as a beach or a city skyline. The idea is to turn an everyday snapshot into something that feels custom-made for sharing.

Text posts are getting a visual boost too. Facebook is gradually rolling out animated backgrounds that can be applied to written posts to help them pop as people scroll. By tapping a rainbow “A” icon, users can pick from both still and animated scenes, including effects like falling leaves or ocean waves. Facebook also says seasonal background options are on the way, which could make holidays and trending moments more visually distinctive on the platform.

Even with roughly 2.1 billion daily active users, Facebook has faced ongoing challenges in attracting and retaining younger people. These new AI features arrive as part of a broader effort to modernize the experience and make the app feel less dated. Recent changes have included a redesigned look intended to feel more youthful, a friends-only feed for more personal browsing, and the option to use unique display names within Groups, similar to how community-based platforms handle identities.

Facebook has also been experimenting with ways to revive older social features. One example is the return of the “poke,” a classic interaction that’s now being pushed with a dedicated button on profiles and notifications that alert the recipient when they’ve been poked.

With animated profile photos, AI photo restyling, and animated post backgrounds, Facebook is clearly betting that lightweight creativity tools can make sharing feel more current again. For users, it means more ways to personalize posts without needing advanced editing skills—and more opportunities to turn simple updates into content that looks designed for today’s social feeds.
