Exciting news for tech enthusiasts as HMD gears up to launch its latest rugged smartphone, the HMD XR22. Building on the solid foundation set by its predecessor, the HMD XR21, this new model promises substantial upgrades across various aspects, making it a noteworthy release in the rugged phone market.
The buzz around the HMD XR22 started with leaked specifications that suggest significant enhancements. Notably, this device is set to boast an FHD+ 120Hz OLED display, capable of a dazzling peak brightness of 1,200 nits, alongside robust Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. This marks a considerable leap from the previous XR21’s 6.49-inch LCD display with a peak brightness of 550 nits.
Under the hood, the XR22 will be powered by the latest Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 processor, complemented by 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage. This is a marked improvement over the XR21’s Snapdragon 695 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage without expansion options—enhancing both speed and storage flexibility.
Photography buffs will be pleased to learn about the camera upgrades. The XR22 will inherit the XR21’s 64MP primary sensor and an 8MP ultrawide lens but will add a new 8MP sensor dedicated to night vision, providing enhanced capabilities for low-light photography. A front-facing 50MP camera will further enhance selfie and video call quality.
Battery life is also receiving a boost, with a larger 5,520mAh battery compared to the previous model’s 4,800mAh. Charging will continue at 33W via USB-C, but the XR22 will now offer 15W wireless charging with Qi 2.0 support, adding a level of convenience for users.
Design-wise, the phone will not only be tough but also smartly functional, featuring dual speakers, an IR blaster, and certifications for both IP69K and MIL-STD-810H, ensuring it can withstand harsh environments and extreme conditions.
While details on its launch date, price, color variants, and availability remain under wraps, speculation suggests that if not released by the year’s end, the HMD XR22 could make its debut at major tech events like CES 2025 or MWC 2025. As excitement builds, tech aficionados will be eager to see how this new rugged smartphone sets itself apart in a crowded market.
