Ex-TikTok Leaders Launch AI App That Coaches Your Best Photo Poses

Superpose Brings AI Pose Coaching to iPhone Photography

AI is quickly changing the way people take photos, and the latest wave of camera tools is focused on helping users improve before they press the shutter. Instead of simply editing images after the fact, new AI-powered apps are stepping in as real-time photography coaches, offering guidance on framing, composition, and now posing.

One of the newest entries in this space is Superpose, an iOS camera app created by former TikTok employees Melody Chu and Jing Liu. The app is designed to solve a familiar problem for many people: looking awkward or unnatural in photos, even when the setting, outfit, or lighting is just right.

Superpose works like a camera app with an AI posing assistant built in. Users can take a selfie or photograph someone else, and the app generates four suggested poses based on the image. These pose ideas can then be saved or used with a “match pose” feature, which helps users position themselves more closely to the AI’s recommendation.

Some of the generated poses are bold and eye-catching, while others may look a little unusual or overly dramatic. Still, the core idea is simple: give everyday users more confidence in front of the camera without needing a professional photographer, stylist, or posing guide.

The inspiration behind Superpose came from Chu’s own experience. She explained that her husband often took unflattering photos of her, turning it into a real-life frustration. With advances in computer vision and generative AI, she saw an opportunity to create a tool that could help people pose better and capture more flattering portraits in ordinary moments.

Chu brings experience from product roles at major technology companies including Meta, Nextdoor, Roblox, TikTok, and Slack. Liu, meanwhile, has a technical background in 3D face scanning and later worked on image and video models at TikTok. Together, they are positioning Superpose as a camera app focused specifically on portrait photography and pose direction.

Since launching in July, Superpose has been downloaded more than 22,000 times. According to the company, users have already generated over 190,000 AI pose suggestions. The app currently gives users five free pose generations per day. Those who want more can purchase five additional generations for $2.99 or 20 generations for $9.99.

While AI photography apps are becoming more common, Superpose is taking a narrower approach. Instead of creating fantasy scenes, artificial backgrounds, or fully generated images, the company wants to focus on real-life photography. The goal is to help people capture better memories as they happen, rather than replace authentic moments with synthetic ones.

Chu has said the team wants Superpose to become the best camera for portrait photos guided by AI. That means helping users understand how to stand, angle their body, move their hands, or adjust their position in the frame. The app is less about transforming reality and more about making real photos look better.

The company also recognizes that AI-generated pose suggestions are not always perfect. Some may appear stiff, strange, or unrealistic, and the team is working to improve the app’s generation quality. Future updates are expected to focus on better pose styles, more personalized suggestions, and improved coaching directly through the camera viewfinder.

Superpose has raised $2.2 million in funding from Khosla Ventures, Meitu, and OVTR Ventures. With AI-powered photography tools gaining momentum, the app is entering the market at a time when many users are looking for smarter ways to take better portraits without needing professional skills.

For anyone who struggles with posing, feels uncomfortable in photos, or wishes their friends and family were better at taking pictures, Superpose offers a practical AI-driven solution. It turns the camera into more than just a capture tool; it becomes a personal posing coach designed to help users look more natural, confident, and photogenic.
