NVIDIA’s latest GeForce RTX 4070 GDDR6 graphics card has hit the market, but the pricing might surprise you. Despite offering comparable performance to its GDDR6X counterpart at 1080p and 1440p resolutions, it’s being sold at higher prices by some retailers.
In Germany, for instance, the RTX 4070 GDDR6 is listed for prices as high as €614. The most affordable model, the Palit GeForce RTX 4070 White OC 12GB GDDR6, sells for €562.07. Several versions from brands like Gigabyte, MSI, and ASUS range between €569 and €614. The priciest of them, the Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4070 Windforce OC V2 12G GDDR6, is set at €614.
Interestingly, the GDDR6X variant can be found for significantly less. For example, the ASUS Dual GeForce RTX 4070 EVO OC edition is available for as low as €536.73, and many other GDDR6X versions fall below the €560 mark, making them a more cost-effective choice.
While the RTX 4070 GDDR6 version holds up well on paper, demonstrating only a slight performance drop of around 2% at 4K due to its 20 Gbps memory configuration versus the 21 Gbps in the GDDR6X version, its higher price is puzzling. It retains all other core specs of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 GPU, which should ideally align its price closer to the GDDR6X edition.
As the market adjusts, we might see the prices of these GDDR6 models dip to more competitive levels. For now, though, it’s tough to justify purchasing the RTX 4070 GDDR6 at these higher prices, especially when the GDDR6X variant provides better value. While the performance gap is negligible at lower resolutions, the price difference makes the GDDR6X version the smarter buy. Keep a close watch, as price adjustments are likely on the horizon, ensuring you get the best bang for your buck.
