Apple has exciting news for travelers who rely on AirTags to keep track of their belongings. The company has unveiled a groundbreaking feature that enables users to temporarily share their AirTag’s location with trusted individuals and airlines. This innovative addition is set to revolutionize how we keep tabs on our luggage, particularly in bustling airports.
With the upcoming Find My app update in iOS 18.2, users will have the ability to temporarily share the location of their AirTags. This functionality will allow airlines to pinpoint misplaced items, ensuring a more streamlined process when tracking down lost luggage. Over 15 airlines, including major players like Turkish Airlines, British Airways, Air Canada, and United, will soon support this feature across their networks.
Apple shared that United Airlines plans to integrate this feature system-wide by early next year, aiming to enhance their customer service by simplifying luggage recovery processes. In recent times, stories have surfaced highlighting how AirTags have successfully been used to locate lost bags, often outpacing airlines’ efforts to do the same. Apple’s service chief, Eddy Cue, expressed enthusiasm over the new capability:
“The synergy of the Find My network and AirTag offers remarkable assistance to travelers, providing indispensable location insights when baggage goes astray. With Share Item Location, users can effortlessly share this vital information with airlines, all while maintaining their privacy.”
This highly anticipated feature will be compatible with devices running iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2. Through the Find My app, users can generate a “Share Item Location” link, which authorities can use to track the item within the airport’s vicinity. The item’s location will be displayed via a web map that updates with the latest positioning data.
Apple is also emphasizing privacy and security in collaboration with airlines, ensuring that the “Share Item Location” link is only accessible to authorized personnel. After the item is reunited with its owner, location sharing will cease automatically or can be manually disabled by the sender at any time. Additionally, this feature will expand to third-party accessories and item trackers compliant with Apple’s Find My ecosystem.
