Dying Light: The Beast Canceled for PS4 and Xbox One Due to Hardware Limits
Techland has officially canceled the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Dying Light: The Beast, confirming that the last-generation consoles cannot deliver the experience the studio originally envisioned without major compromises.
The decision comes after months of development work and technical evaluation. According to Techland, Dying Light: The Beast was built around current-generation hardware, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The game’s open world, visual quality, fast-paced combat, and parkour systems all require more processing power and memory than the PS4 and Xbox One can reliably provide.
Rather than releasing a heavily downgraded version, Techland has chosen to cancel the last-gen ports entirely. The studio explained that bringing the game to older consoles would have required significant reductions across key areas, including environmental detail, performance, movement fluidity, enemy encounters, and overall world design.
For a series known for its intense zombie action, free-running traversal, and immersive open-world gameplay, those cuts would have changed the core experience too much. Techland appears to have decided that preserving the quality of Dying Light: The Beast is more important than launching on as many platforms as possible.
The cancellation is another clear sign that the gaming industry is moving further away from PS4 and Xbox One. While both consoles still have large player bases, many modern games are now being designed specifically for newer hardware. Developers are increasingly focusing on faster storage, stronger CPUs, better graphics technology, and larger memory pools available on current-generation systems.
Players who were waiting for Dying Light: The Beast on PS4 or Xbox One will be eligible for refunds. This includes affected users who pre-ordered the game, as well as eligible Dying Light 2 owners on PS4 who were previously expected to receive access through certain editions. Techland has confirmed that refund options will be available, though players may need to check their original purchase platform or support channel for specific details.
The good news for current-generation players is that development support for Dying Light: The Beast on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC will continue as planned. Future updates, fixes, and post-launch content remain unaffected by the cancellation of the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
For fans still playing on older consoles, the news is disappointing but not entirely surprising. As games become more ambitious, last-generation hardware is becoming harder to support without sacrificing performance or design. In the case of Dying Light: The Beast, Techland has made it clear that the full vision of the game belongs on newer platforms.
