A recent drop test of the Apple Vision Pro has provided a glimpse into the durability of Apple’s highly anticipated mixed reality headset. Priced at approximately $3,500, users have to weigh the risks and benefits of this significant investment in cutting-edge technology.
Unlike the typical unboxing videos and feature walkthroughs, this test delved into how the headset would fare against real-world accidents. It turns out that the first-generation headset is quite prone to being knocked against surfaces, as it only offers proximity warnings in full VR or immersive modes.
During the testing, it was observed that the headset’s front glass could withstand multiple impacts, with minor scuffing only occurring after about 20 hits. This resistance to damage might be attributed to the curvature of the glass, which potentially helps distribute the force of impact across the device.
However, repetitive drops did reveal some vulnerabilities. Key components such as the headset’s speakers took a hit in functionality after a few falls. Significant damage, including a cracked front glass, appeared after eight drops, one from a height of over six feet. Despite this, the internal dual screens and cameras remained intact, showcasing an impressive build quality for the most delicate components.
One point of concern is the headset’s light-seal attachment, which revealed an inadequate magnetic connection, making it easier for the headset to slip out of users’ hands. Given the high repair costs that Apple might charge for this headset, which could reach up to $2,399 without AppleCare+, it’s essential for users to handle their device with care.
For those already invested in the Apple Vision Pro, or considering its purchase, it could be worthwhile to look into protective cases to safeguard this premium piece of technology from accidental damage. As with all high-end devices, it’s best to enjoy the experience without having to test its limits unintentionally.
