Final Fantasy XIV has been going strong for more than a decade, and part of its staying power comes from how widely it has expanded across gaming platforms over the years. The MMORPG first arrived for Windows and PlayStation 3 at the end of August 2013. It then took nearly a year to reach PlayStation 4, before landing on macOS in late June 2015. The PlayStation 5 version followed at the end of May 2021, and most recently, Final Fantasy XIV finally joined the Xbox ecosystem with an Xbox Series X|S release in the latter part of March 2024.
While the game is best known for its evolving story, raids, and community-driven endgame, there’s another reason many players stick with it for years: the music. Final Fantasy XIV’s soundtrack has become a major draw in its own right, largely thanks to composer and sound director Masayoshi Soken. That passion for big, memorable themes didn’t just stay in the studio, either. In 2014, Soken formed a heavy metal band tied to the game’s music universe: The Primals.
Since then, The Primals have grown from a fan-favorite side project into a full-scale live act with a catalog to match. The band released their first album in 2018, followed by additional studio albums in 2020 and 2022. Alongside those, they’ve also put out two live recordings, helping capture the high-energy atmosphere that Final Fantasy XIV music is known for when performed on stage.
Now, The Primals are preparing for a major milestone: their first performance outside Asia in a standalone concert setting. Square Enix says the band’s appearance at Download Festival 2026 will mark the first time they’ve played a standalone show beyond Asia (outside of the global fan festival events held around the world). It’s a notable moment not just for Final Fantasy XIV fans, but also for the growing presence of video game music in mainstream rock and metal spaces.
Download Festival 2026 kicks off on Friday, June 12, and runs through Sunday, June 14. The Primals are scheduled to perform on June 12 at the Dogtooth Stage. This year’s headliners are Limp Bizkit, Guns n’ Roses, and Linkin Park, with a stacked lineup that also includes Halestorm, Architects, Behemoth, The Pretty Reckless, Mastodon, Scooter, Babymetal, Static-X, and many more.
For longtime Warriors of Light and curious festivalgoers alike, The Primals’ set is shaping up to be one of the most distinctive performances at Download Festival 2026—bringing Final Fantasy XIV’s signature musical range, metal-driven intensity, and crowd-hyping energy to one of the UK’s best-known rock festivals.
