Media giant Disney has outlined plans to debut a brand-new standalone ESPN streaming platform in the fall of 2025. Amidst discussions about enhancing the ESPN brand’s digital presence, more light has been shed on what to expect from this anticipated service.
This announcement arrives closely on the heels of news that Fox, Warner Bros Discovery, and Disney collectively aimed to introduce a sports streaming service later this year. The forthcoming ESPN service is said to offer more advanced features compared to the collaborative platform, although specific details remain under wraps. The project is still some time away, and it seems Disney intends to refine its offerings closer to launch.
Unconfirmed Pricing, Possible Bundles with Disney Plus and Hulu Suggested
No official word on the pricing for the ESPN streaming service has been shared yet. However, speculation suggests a price tag ranging from $30 to $50 – a plausible figure considering the cost of comparable services like Bally Sports Plus.
CEO Bob Iger expressed enthusiasm during Disney’s earnings call about the prospects of the stand-alone service, anticipating benefits like increased viewer engagement, reduced subscriber turnover, and expanded advertising prospects. Iger also mentioned potential bundling with Disney Plus and Hulu for a more cohesive streaming experience.
December marked the beginning of closer integration between Disney Plus and Hulu, as Disney introduced a section for Hulu’s original content within the Disney Plus app as part of a beta test. A full integration is anticipated to roll out in the first half of 2024, further bridging the gap between the platforms in preparation for the ESPN service’s debut.
With consumers showing an increasing preference for streaming options, and the sports broadcasting landscape evolving, Disney’s strategic move into a specialized ESPN streaming service appears to be in line with broader trends in content consumption and distribution.
