Discover the Instagram Threads App: Everything You Need to Know

With Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022, a wave of social media innovation has fostered fresh alternatives for users eager to explore new platforms. Among these contenders are Mastodon, Bluesky, Spill, and T2. Meta’s Threads also stands out, offering a compelling twist on text-based engagement.

So, what makes Threads unique? Seamlessly linked with your Instagram account, Threads provides an intuitive setup by using existing Instagram credentials, allowing users to effortlessly transition into this new digital space.

Unlike Twitter, Threads has chosen for the moment to forgo paid tiers and ads, while incorporating the verification mark from Instagram, including those obtained via Meta Verified. This synchronization empowers users to extend their Instagram circle to Threads, streamlining the process of connecting with familiar accounts.

Despite being around for over a year, Threads doesn’t yet match Twitter in some areas, such as direct messaging, long video support, or live audio rooms. However, it’s gaining traction with availability on iOS and Android in over 100 countries. Although the app initially faced privacy challenges in the European Union, its December 2023 launch in the region allowed users to browse content without an account, though they couldn’t interact with posts.

Threads’ user base has soared, boasting over 275 million monthly active users by November 2024. This growth was meteoric, with more than 100 million sign-ups in just five days post-launch. The platform supports lively and diverse content, permitting users to post text, images, video, and GIFs up to 500 characters long, with a cap of ten media items per post. Amidst tackling spam attacks, Threads has implemented rate limits on the number of posts users can view.

Accessibility is a key feature, with users able to view and publish content via Threads.net on the web. Deactivating or deleting a Threads account is possible, though notably tied to the Instagram account’s deletion process. Meta retains user data for 30 days post-deletion request, allowing for reversal within this window.

Customization on Threads is continually evolving, with users able to pin search terms and tags, create curated feeds, and customize their own default feed rather than relying on algorithm-driven choices. Inspired by competitors, Threads has introduced “Starter Packs” for theme-based follower recommendations and is testing interest additions to profiles to guide topic conversations.

Direct messaging hasn’t found its way to Threads, aligning with Instagram head Adam Mosseri’s vision of reducing inbox proliferation by integrating communication through existing apps. Threads took a step forward by launching a public API in June 2024, facilitating developers to create content management tools, though currently without third-party client functionality.

The platform is partly embedded in the fediverse, allowing cross-platform post sharing with networks like Mastodon. By the close of 2024, fediverse interaction deepened with enhancements allowing Threads users to engage with posts and followers from other servers.

While Threads is still developing features like full Fediverse integration, post scheduling, and support for third-party clients, its rapid growth and adaptability underline its potential. However, the app’s data collection practices echo broader concerns with centralized platforms, as its integration with Instagram entails similar privacy labels and data collection policies, as noted by Meta’s deputy chief privacy officer.

Threads represents not only a new chapter in Meta’s social media strategy but also an exciting frontier for users seeking fresh digital interactions.
