Digital Extremes Excited for Potential Warframe Port on Switch 2 Amid Devkit Demands

Fans of Warframe who are eager to experience an upgraded version on the Nintendo Switch 2 will need to hold on a little longer. Digital Extremes, the developers behind Warframe, are still awaiting a development kit from Nintendo, causing a delay in their plans for a Switch 2 port.

Though the Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, Digital Extremes has been caught in a backlog for development kits. This news emerged during a press Q&A session with Eurogamer, where CEO Steve Sinclair expressed the team’s enthusiasm for bringing Warframe to the new platform. Sinclair shared, “Our tech team is excited to utilize the high-speed cores and other cool features of Switch 2. There’s just a backlog of dev kits. So, if you know anyone… just one, that’s all it would take.”

With an enhanced version for Switch 2, Digital Extremes aims to introduce quality-of-life updates such as improved graphics, Joy-Con mouse functionality, and faster load times, surpassing what the original Switch version offered.

For now, Switch 2 owners can still play Warframe through backward compatibility with the original Switch port. However, players have encountered crashes and errors, an issue that Digital Extremes is actively investigating.

Digital Extremes is not the only studio facing delays in obtaining a Switch 2 devkit. Other developers like Ant Workshop and Fellow Traveller Games are also on a waitlist, possibly due to production constraints. Meanwhile, larger studios have been prioritized, with CD Projekt Red releasing Cyberpunk 2077 as a day-one title and FromSoftware preparing to launch Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition in 2025.

Despite these setbacks, Warframe’s developers remain committed to releasing a Switch 2 port. Sinclair reassured, “Oh, I can’t wait. We definitely have plans. When we get a dev kit, we’ll be doing a custom build for Warframe. Absolutely.”

Warframe is already available on major platforms, including PS5, Xbox Series S|X, PC, and iOS, with an Android version expected in fall 2025. Additionally, a new story chapter titled “The Old Peace” is on the horizon, continuing the game’s Void story arc towards the “Tau” update planned for 2026. Until the devkit bottleneck is resolved, Switch 2 owners will have to exercise patience for a native Warframe port.
