Enthusiast-grade graphics cards are supposed to look and feel special, but even premium models don’t always impress everyone with their stock cooling solutions. That’s exactly where Thermal Grizzly’s DELTAMATE steps in—a purpose-built, no-compromise GPU water block designed specifically for the ASUS ROG Astral GeForce RTX 5080. It’s also the kind of component aimed at builders who don’t blink at a price north of $600 if the cooling performance and craftsmanship deliver a truly premium experience.
Overclocker and hardware expert Der8auer recently showcased what he calls the most ambitious GPU water block Thermal Grizzly has made so far, and the results highlight why the DELTAMATE is positioned as a flagship custom-liquid-cooling upgrade rather than a typical accessory.
The DELTAMATE’s design is as much about presentation as it is about thermals. It features a real glass window set into a black anodized aluminum housing. While that might sound simple on paper, the build and finishing process is described as anything but easy, especially when it comes to achieving the ultra-smooth backplate finish that gives the block its high-end look. That meticulous manufacturing effort is one of the reasons the price climbs so high—but the main justification is the cooling hardware itself.
In Der8auer’s testing, the ROG Astral RTX 5080 on its stock cooler ran around 70°C under full load in FurMark stress testing, with VRAM temperatures landing roughly in the 64–66°C range. Those memory temps are perfectly acceptable for everyday gaming and typical use, but the overall thermals show that the card can still run fairly warm when pushed hard.
Once swapped to the Thermal Grizzly DELTAMATE, the temperature drop was immediate and substantial. Idle temperatures sat around 25°C for the GPU core, while memory hovered near 36°C. Under a sustained FurMark load of more than 10 minutes, the GPU reportedly struggled to exceed 49°C, and VRAM came in even lower at about 44°C. Compared to the stock cooling setup, that’s a major improvement in both core and memory temperatures—exactly the kind of headroom enthusiasts want for quieter operation, consistent boost behavior, and the satisfaction of running high-end hardware well below typical thermal limits.
A big part of that performance comes down to the DELTAMATE’s heavy-duty internal construction. The block uses a huge copper cooling assembly and a dual cold plate design. Notably, the VRAM cold plate alone weighs over 900 grams, emphasizing just how much metal and thermal mass is dedicated to pulling heat away from the memory.
The only detail likely to stop most buyers is the price. At $643, the DELTAMATE costs close to half of the GeForce RTX 5080’s MSRP. Pair that with the ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5080’s current street pricing—reported around $1900 at major retailers—and an Astral plus DELTAMATE build can approach roughly $2500 before factoring in the rest of a custom water-cooling loop.
For the average gamer, the stock cooler is “good enough.” But for high-end PC builders chasing top-tier custom liquid cooling, standout aesthetics, and dramatically lower GPU and VRAM temperatures, the Thermal Grizzly DELTAMATE for the ROG Astral RTX 5080 is positioned as an ultra-premium option that prioritizes performance and craftsmanship over affordability.
