Declining Trust in AI Companies: A Global Trend

In an era where artificial intelligence (AI) technology is becoming more prevalent, a newly released report suggests that trust in AI companies is waning among users worldwide. Companies often boast about the superior security of their AI products, but these claims are not entirely allaying user concerns.

The integration of AI into various aspects of our digital lives necessitates trust, particularly because AI models are often trained using vast amounts of internet data and personal conversations. Users need to feel confident that AI companies will honor their commitments to safety and security.

Global Trust in AI Companies Falls, Report Indicates

Over the past five years, global confidence in AI companies has notably shifted. A survey indicates that only 53% of users globally maintain trust in AI companies, a decline from the 61% recorded five years ago. This trend is even more pronounced in the United States, where trust has plummeted from 50% to a mere 35% during the same period.

The report suggests that the emergence of generative AI, which has become more accessible to the public in recent years, may be partially responsible for this decline in trust. The ability of these new technologies to generate content, coupled with a lack of robust regulations, has led to a growing demand for governmental oversight. According to Justin Westcott, Global Technology Chair at Edelman, the public has a clear stance on AI regulation, questioning the existing rules—or lack thereof.

Presently, the absence of specific laws or regulations surrounding AI technology is a major cause for concern among users, which is reflected in the declining trust levels. Developed countries including France, Australia, the US, the UK, The Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland, and Canada are less inclined to adopt AI technology due to these trust issues.

Contrastingly, emerging markets such as Saudi Arabia, India, China, Kenya, Nigeria, and Thailand appear more open to embracing AI. Nonetheless, the overall global trend indicates a reluctance to trust and accept AI technology.

As AI continues to penetrate various industries, it remains to be seen whether trust levels will improve or continue to deteriorate. The eventual widespread adoption of AI technology may hinge on the industry’s ability to build and maintain user trust through enhanced security measures and clearer regulation.
