The creative mind behind innovative apps like Pixelfed, Loops, and Sup, which serve as open-source alternatives to Instagram, TikTok, and WhatsApp respectively, is making waves on Kickstarter. The aim? To gather needed funds to push these apps further in development and establish a flourishing social network community within the fediverse. This decentralized network operates on the ActivityPub protocol, the same as Mastodon, an alternative platform that rose to prominence after the ownership change at Twitter in 2022.
In the wake of Twitter’s sale and the subsequent shift from traditional social media avenues, platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky have witnessed an expanding user base. Users are growing weary of centralized networks dominated by tech giants and their billion-dollar empires, such as Elon Musk’s and Mark Zuckerberg’s, and are seeking more independent alternatives.
In a strategic move, Meta, recognizing the changing landscape, initiated its own fediverse journey by rolling out Instagram Threads. As part of its growth strategy, it aims to integrate fully with ActivityPub, further emphasizing the relevance of decentralized networks.
Now, Canadian developer Daniel Supernault, who stands at the forefront of this digital rebellion against centralized social media, is rallying for financial support to enhance and maintain his apps for the community they attract. Supernault shared his campaign on Mastodon, proclaiming, “Help us put control back into the hands of the people!”
Thanks to an overwhelming response, the Kickstarter campaign has already surpassed its initial target, amassing $58,383. Supernault envisions his applications leading the charge as the first in the fediverse to reach a global network of a billion users. While this is an ambitious goal, the journey is only just beginning. For example, Pixelfed recently celebrated the launch of its version 1.0 mobile app, whereas Loops remains in the alpha testing phase. Sup hasn’t been released yet but promises to debut soon, as teased on its Instagram page. Those backing the Kickstarter campaign will be the first to experience Loops and Sup upon their release.
Another exciting addition to these projects is PubKit, designed to support developers building within the fediverse. This toolkit includes interactive features and testing frameworks essential for setting up and managing digital platforms, ensuring a seamless blend of technology and user experience.
This is the first occasion that Supernault has reached out for Kickstarter support, a venture designed not only to foster the development of these apps but also to benefit the Pixelfed Foundation. A successful campaign could lead to the registration of this foundation as a nonprofit and expand its scope beyond the reliance on volunteers.
In the pipeline is a blogging application intended to rival platforms like Tumblr or LiveJournal, expanding the range of decentralized alternatives.
With Pixelfed.social already boasting over 200,000 users, driven partially by the mobile app’s release, the funds gathered will bolster infrastructure such as storage, CDNs, and powerful computing capabilities. Additionally, this financial boost will enable Supernault to focus more intently on app development and the overarching fediverse community, enhancing moderation, security, and privacy to align with modern social app standards.
One of the future aspirations is to introduce end-to-end encryption into the fediverse, paving the way for a more secure and user-controlled digital environment.
