Countries Restricted from Using PayPal for Steam Purchases Amid Payment Dispute

Buyers encountering hurdles when purchasing Steam games are voicing their concerns as Valve removes PayPal as a payment option in various regions. This change leaves those outside six supported currencies—EUR, USD, CAD, GBP, JPY, and AUD—scrambling for alternatives. Many gamers are left questioning the absence of a detailed explanation from Steam or PayPal, after facing previous hurdles accessing adult content games due to payment processor restrictions.

Valve indicates the issue stems from banks used by PayPal in specific regions no longer being viable options. While Valve aims to restore PayPal for affected countries, there’s no timeline for its return. This situation has sparked widespread speculation, amidst memories of July’s controversy where mature-themed games vanished due to pressure from payment processors, allegedly influenced by activist group Collective Shout, known for its stance against female objectification.

Interestingly, countries like Australia, home to Collective Shout, still have PayPal access. Critics suggest that other factors, such as concerns about fraud or VPN usage to exploit regional pricing, might be contributing to PayPal’s unavailability. The situation highlights growing frustrations over the role of payment processors in the gaming industry.

In the meantime, Valve recommends using Steam Wallets, gift cards, or credit cards. However, even major credit cards face criticism for their involvement. Consequently, building a diverse gaming library on Steam has become increasingly difficult.
