The latest Radeon RX 9070 GRE, exclusive to China, has been garnering attention with reviews highlighting its performance. This GPU, though similar to the RX 7900 GRE in gaming prowess, stands out on several fronts.
The RX 9070 GRE, built on AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture, uses the NAVI 48 die like its counterparts, the RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT. It features 3072 Stream Processors and 12 GB of GDDR6 VRAM, strategically positioned between the RX 9060 XT and RX 9070 models. Recently released reviews provide insights into how it compares to other current and past generation GPUs.
Performance-wise, the RX 9070 GRE mirrors the RX 7900 GRE, an RDNA 3-based model initially launched in China but later available worldwide. The main distinction lies in the specs, with the RX 7900 GRE boasting 4 GB more VRAM, potentially a deciding factor for some users. Pricing plays a critical role too, with the RX 7900 GRE launching at $549 and its successor expected at under $500, with the RX 9070 itself priced at $549.
Interestingly, despite expectations, the RX 9070 shows a 15% performance advantage over the RX 9070 GRE. Meanwhile, the latter is only 5% slower than NVIDIA’s RTX 5070, revealing some unexpected gaps due to game and application choices. In some scenarios, the RX 9070 GRE matches the RTX 5070, while other times, it lags by up to 20%.
When placed against the RTX 5060 Ti, the RX 9070 GRE delivers an impressive 27% speed advantage, a notable performance boost even though it’s not its direct competitor. AMD is set to introduce the RX 9060 XT at Computex, which will challenge the RTX 5060 Ti with a new NAVI 44 die.
For those keeping tabs on graphics card developments, the RX 9070 GRE is a noteworthy contender in the ever-evolving GPU landscape.
