At the heart of the dispute is former Apple engineer Chen Shi. Apple alleges Shi took 63 protected files on sensor hardware research and development before leaving the company, then delivered a large presentation to Oppo employees describing Apple’s sensor R&D approach and answering detailed questions. Apple claims those materials contained confidential trade secrets and further alleges Oppo encouraged the misappropriation. Apple also says Shi tried to delete traces of the information from Oppo’s systems after the lawsuit was filed.
Oppo disputes the accusations. The company says a comprehensive search found no sign that it ever received Apple trade secret information from Shi and characterizes the presentation as covering broad, non-proprietary engineering principles. Shi has agreed to sit for a deposition, while asking the court to limit its duration due to health concerns.
