The Ribbon Hero

Classic 1950s Manga Reimagined in The Ribbon Hero

Netflix has revealed the first look at The Ribbon Hero, an upcoming anime film inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s timeless manga Princess Knight. The announcement introduced the film’s lead cast, a striking key visual, and a teaser trailer, giving anime fans an early glimpse at what could become one of Netflix’s most anticipated anime releases of 2026.

Produced by Outline Studio, The Ribbon Hero is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Netflix on August 8, 2026. The film revisits one of the most influential stories in manga history, bringing a modern cinematic approach to a classic tale first published in 1953.

Princess Knight is often remembered as one of Osamu Tezuka’s landmark works. More than 70 years after its debut, the story continues to stand out for its fairy-tale setting, royal drama, and bold themes surrounding identity, duty, and gender roles. The manga was previously adapted into an anime series in 1967 and later received a feature film adaptation in 1999.

The original story follows Princess Sapphire, a young royal born into a kingdom where only men are allowed to inherit the throne. To protect the future of the kingdom, Sapphire is raised and presented as a prince from the moment of her birth. Her father, the King, announces that his child is a boy, hiding her true identity from the court and the public.

This secret is not simply a matter of tradition. If Sapphire cannot take the throne, the kingdom risks falling into the hands of Duke Duralumon, a cruel and power-hungry nobleman who would bring suffering to the people. To prevent that fate, Sapphire must live under a carefully guarded disguise while carrying the burden of royal responsibility.

The Ribbon Hero appears set to reimagine this beloved story for a new generation while preserving the spirit of the original. The newly released key visual highlights the film’s elegant fantasy atmosphere, suggesting a world filled with court intrigue, adventure, and emotional conflict.

The anime film is directed by Yuki Igarashi, who previously worked as a key animator on projects including Virgin Punk and GquuuuuuX. The Ribbon Hero will mark Igarashi’s first time directing a feature-length film, making the project an important milestone in the director’s career.

The role of Sapphire will be performed by Saya, known as a comedian from LALANDE and as the vocalist of Raisan. Her casting adds an intriguing creative layer to the film, as she brings experience from both comedy and music to one of classic manga’s most memorable heroines.

With its mix of legendary source material, fresh creative talent, and Netflix’s global platform, The Ribbon Hero is already shaping up to be a major anime title to watch. The film premieres worldwide on August 8, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
