Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has crossed a major milestone, selling more than 4.4 million copies worldwide since launching on April 24, 2025. The stylish, turn-based RPG from French studio Sandfall Interactive has been a breakout success, pairing strong sales with widespread critical acclaim.
Published by Kepler Interactive, the game currently holds a 93 Metacritic Must-Play score based on 83 critic reviews, alongside a 9.7 user rating—making it the highest-rated game of 2025 so far. Momentum started fast, with over 500,000 copies sold in the first 24 hours and 3.3 million tallied just 33 days after release.
The latest figure was shared during an appearance on the French YouTube channel Clips du lundi by members of Sandfall Interactive, including technical character artist Amandine Marest, producer Benjamin Dimanche, and senior gameplay programmer Florian Torres. When asked for an update, Marest clarified the internal count: “Officially, 3.3 million, but it’s 4.4 million.” In other words, the game added roughly 1.1 million more sales over the months following its first post-launch update—an impressive feat for a debut indie title.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the studio’s origin story. Founded in 2021 by a team of around 30 developers who left larger AAA studios, Sandfall set out to build a passion project that blends classic JRPG sensibilities with French artistic flair. That vision shaped Expedition 33’s world and narrative, centered on the enigmatic Paintress, a force that erases people upon turning 33.
Despite launching day one on Xbox Game Pass—a factor that can sometimes dampen traditional sales—Clair Obscur has significantly outperformed expectations. Visibility from major Xbox showcases helped, but word of mouth around its combat systems, art direction, and story has kept interest high long after release.
The studio isn’t slowing down. Sandfall has confirmed plans to expand Clair Obscur into a broader franchise, with a follow-up project already underway. While details remain under wraps, fans are speculating about a full sequel or substantial DLC that explores new corners of the universe.
For players seeking a standout, JRPG-inspired experience with an original aesthetic and a gripping premise, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is shaping up to be one of the year’s essential RPGs—both a critical darling and a commercial powerhouse.
