Citizen Introduces Three Affordable Automatic Watches With Vintage Style and Textured Dials
Citizen is expanding its mechanical watch lineup with three new automatic models that bring classic styling, textured dials, and Japan-made craftsmanship to an accessible price point. While the brand is widely recognized for its Eco-Drive light-powered watches, these new releases show that Citizen is still serious about affordable mechanical watches for everyday wear.
The latest models, the Citizen NJ0250-01A, NJ0250-01B, and NJ0252-05A, are part of the Citizen Collection and are designed for buyers who want the charm of a traditional automatic watch without stepping into luxury-watch pricing. Each model features a polished stainless steel case, a leather strap, a vintage-style box-shaped crystal, and a see-through caseback that reveals the movement inside.
The standout design feature is the dial. Citizen has used a pyramid-like texture inspired by the Clous de Paris pattern, also known as a hobnail pattern. This gives the watches more depth and character than a plain dial, helping them look more refined while still keeping the overall design clean and elegant.
Each version has its own personality. The NJ0250-01A pairs a silver dial with blue Roman numerals and matching blue hands, creating a dressy and slightly more modern look. The NJ0250-01B takes a more traditional route with black Arabic numerals and black hands, making it the most understated option in the lineup. The NJ0252-05A adds a warmer feel with a rose gold-colored case, Roman numerals, rose gold-tone hands, and a brown cowhide leather strap.
Citizen has also leaned into vintage watch design with a spherical box-shaped crystal. This detail gives the watches an old-school profile while still keeping them practical for daily use. A date window is positioned at 3 o’clock, and the exhibition caseback adds extra appeal for anyone who enjoys seeing the mechanics of an automatic watch in motion.
All three models measure 40mm in diameter and 10.7mm thick, making them suitable for a wide range of wrist sizes. The 40mm case size should feel versatile enough for both casual and dress settings, while the slim profile helps the watches avoid feeling bulky.
Inside the watches is Citizen’s Caliber 8210 automatic movement. This mechanical movement supports both automatic winding through wrist motion and manual winding by the crown. It offers an approximate 42-hour power reserve, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, and uses 21 jewels. Accuracy is rated at -20 to +40 seconds per day, which is typical for an entry-level mechanical movement in this price range.
The watches also come with 50 meters of water resistance, rated at 5 ATM, making them suitable for everyday splashes and light water exposure. They also include Type 1 magnetic resistance, adding a useful layer of protection for daily wear.
Pricing is one of the strongest parts of this release. The Citizen NJ0250-01A and NJ0250-01B are priced at ¥38,500, which is roughly $241. The rose gold-colored NJ0252-05A is slightly higher at ¥40,700, or about $255. All three models are scheduled to launch in Japan on September 10.
For now, Citizen has not confirmed availability in other regions, including the United States or the United Kingdom. However, given the brand’s international presence and the growing interest in affordable automatic watches, these models could attract plenty of attention if they reach global markets.
