China’s Delayed Export Clearances Put Pressure on Taiwan’s Optics and Aerospace Supply Chains

China has reportedly slowed customs clearance for several critical materials, creating new challenges for Taiwanese companies that rely on steady supplies for aerospace, optical, and precision technology manufacturing.

Since 2025, delays have affected materials such as germanium, quartz-based components, and neodymium magnets. These materials are essential in a wide range of advanced industries, including high-performance optics, satellite systems, defense-related equipment, sensors, lasers, and precision manufacturing tools.

For Taiwanese suppliers, even a small disruption in the flow of these materials can create major production problems. Longer customs processing times mean companies may have to wait weeks longer than expected for key inputs. In industries where delivery schedules are strict and contracts are tied to deadlines, those delays can quickly increase costs and put customer relationships at risk.

Germanium is especially important for infrared optics, thermal imaging systems, fiber-optic technology, and some semiconductor applications. Quartz-based materials are widely used in optical components, laboratory equipment, and electronics manufacturing. Neodymium magnets are also vital because of their strength and efficiency, making them important for motors, aerospace systems, robotics, and advanced electronics.

The reported clearance delays highlight how dependent many technology supply chains remain on critical raw materials from China. Taiwan is a major player in global electronics, optics, and precision engineering, but many manufacturers still rely on overseas suppliers for specialized minerals and processed materials.
