OpenAI said Friday that the AI chatbot now has 900 million people using it each week, underscoring just how quickly generative AI has become part of everyday life. Alongside that surge in usage, OpenAI also revealed it has reached 50 million paying subscribers, highlighting rapidly growing demand for premium AI tools.
In its update, the company said subscriber growth has been especially strong at the start of the year. OpenAI noted that January and February are on pace to become its biggest months ever for new subscribers, signaling accelerating momentum for ChatGPT’s paid plans. The company emphasized that people rely on ChatGPT for a wide range of tasks, including learning, writing, planning, and building projects.
OpenAI also argued that the product improves as more people use it, pointing to practical upgrades users can notice right away. The new 900 million weekly active user figure represents a significant leap from the 800 million users OpenAI reported in October 2025, a gain of 100 million in a relatively short time. The user and subscriber milestones were shared alongside another headline-grabbing announcement: OpenAI has raised $110 billion in private funding, one of the largest private funding rounds ever. The company said the financing includes a $50 billion investment from Amazon, plus $30 billion each from Nvidia and SoftBank. The round values OpenAI at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, and OpenAI added that the fundraise remains open, with additional investors expected to join.
