Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the leading name in battery manufacturing, is making waves with a breakthrough in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology. Stepping out of the realms of research and development, CATL has announced a game-changing EV battery that promises an impressive lifespan of 15 years, capable of covering nearly one million miles. This new battery comes with a 10-year or 600,000-mile warranty, guaranteeing 85% capacity retention at the end of the period.
To put this into perspective, the batteries currently used in electric vehicles such as Teslas typically come with an 8-year warranty and promise only 70% capacity retention. CATL’s new offering nearly doubles the reliable lifespan of EV batteries, setting a new precedent in the industry.
Key to this advancement is CATL’s low-lithium consumption technology, which is designed to significantly reduce the depletion of active lithium content during use. By greatly improving the stability of the anode material’s surface and structure, CATL ensures the battery’s ultra-long life and dependable performance.
The Tectrans Bus Edition battery from CATL is specifically designed for vehicles that regularly cover long distances, such as electric buses and light-duty trucks. These new batteries boast a 175 Wh/kg energy density, the highest in the electric bus industry, emphasizing lifespan and stability over sheer performance. CATL guarantees minimal battery degradation in the first 1,000 charge-discharge cycles, with lab tests indicating these batteries can maintain 85% of their capacity even after 16 years.
CATL is also eyeing the broader electric vehicle market, partnering with NIO to develop batteries intended to last the vehicle’s lifetime. NIO focuses on the regulatory and testing aspects while CATL handles battery development. This collaborative effort aims to introduce cars with a 15-year battery warranty before a surge of used EVs with expired warranties floods the market in the next few years.
A 15-year EV warranty could transform the secondary market for electric cars. NIO argues that this will assuage consumer fears about expensive battery replacements, making used electric cars more appealing. CATL already offers a 12-year warranty on the batteries used in NIO’s battery swap stations, indicating a strong direction towards long-lasting battery solutions.
CATL’s innovative battery technology is on the verge of being implemented in over 80 vehicle models across 13 different companies. With these advancements, CATL is not just extending the life of EV batteries; it’s redefining what consumers can expect in terms of reliability and performance in the electric vehicle market.
