Can Alexa+ Be Trusted? Putting Amazon’s New AI Assistant to the Test

Amazon’s Alexa+ is being promoted as the next major evolution of the company’s voice assistant, bringing generative AI into the Echo experience. The idea is simple: instead of memorizing exact voice commands, users should be able to speak more naturally, ask complicated questions, continue conversations, and get more useful answers.

In many ways, Alexa+ really does feel like a major upgrade. It understands flexible wording far better than the older version of Alexa, responds to more complex requests, and no longer feels as limited by rigid command structures. The familiar “Sorry, I don’t know that one” response appears much less often, and when Alexa+ does not fully understand something, it is more likely to ask a follow-up question instead of simply giving up.

That makes the new Alexa feel much more conversational. You can ask a detailed question, adjust your request, or continue with a related topic without starting from scratch every time. For many Echo users, this is exactly the kind of improvement they have been waiting for.

A good example is recipe creation. If you ask Alexa+ to create a vegetarian Greek moussaka recipe without minced meat, with extra tomato sauce and a cheese crust, the assistant can handle the request surprisingly well. It understands the substitutions, structures the recipe, and provides a practical answer.

There are still some early quirks, though. In one test, Alexa+ read out recipe bullet points as “minus,” making it sound as if the dish required negative amounts of ingredients. That is clearly a small bug rather than a serious issue, and it is the kind of rough edge that will likely improve over time.

The bigger concern is not that Alexa+ sometimes makes mistakes. The bigger concern is how confidently it makes them.

With the older Alexa, a lack of knowledge was often obvious. It might say it did not know the answer, or that it did not understand the question. Alexa+ is different. Because it is powered by AI, it can generate a smooth, polished response even when the information is wrong.

That creates a new problem for users: a confident answer can sound trustworthy, even when it is completely inaccurate.

For example, when asked about the depth of Lake Neufeld in Austria, Alexa+ reportedly answered that it was only a few meters deep and described it as a very shallow lake. In reality, Lake Neufeld is around 24 meters deep. The assistant may have confused it with another nearby lake, but the issue is that it presented the incorrect answer with complete certainty.

This type of error is commonly known as an AI hallucination. It happens when an AI system generates information that sounds plausible but is false. The frustrating part is that these errors can be inconsistent. Ask the same question again later, or ask through a different Alexa interface, and the assistant may give the correct answer.

For everyday users, this means Alexa+ can be extremely useful, but it should not be treated as infallible. For casual questions, recipes, smart home control, and general assistance, it can be impressive. For factual information that matters, users may still want to verify the answer.

Another major change is Follow-Up Mode, which is now enabled by default. This feature allows Alexa+ to keep listening briefly after it responds, so users can ask another question without repeating the wake word. Combined with better conversation memory, this makes the assistant feel more natural and less robotic.

For example, you can ask about a topic, then follow up with “What about tomorrow?” or “Can you make it vegetarian?” and Alexa+ can usually understand the context. This is one of the most noticeable improvements in the new experience.

However, Follow-Up Mode also introduces new annoyances. If there are other people talking in the room, Alexa+ may misinterpret background conversation as a command. That can lead to unwanted actions.

One real-world example involved setting a cooking timer while other people were talking nearby. Alexa+ set the timer correctly, but later appeared to pick up part of the surrounding conversation and deleted the timer. In a kitchen, that kind of mistake is more than a minor inconvenience.

This highlights the trade-off with a more conversational assistant. The experience feels smoother and more human, but it also increases the chances of accidental interactions. Users who prefer simple one-time commands may find the default Follow-Up Mode more intrusive than helpful.

Performance is another area where Alexa+ may feel different depending on the device. On older Echo models, even basic commands can take a little longer to process. The delay is usually only a few seconds, but longtime Alexa users are used to nearly instant responses, so the slower reaction time is noticeable.

Amazon says newer Echo devices are better optimized for Alexa+, and early user feedback suggests that the latest hardware handles the upgraded assistant more smoothly. Still, upgrading to a newer Echo device adds extra cost, which may disappoint users who expected the improved Alexa experience to work just as quickly on older speakers.

Overall, Alexa+ is a major step forward for Amazon’s voice assistant. It is more flexible, more conversational, and more capable than the previous version. It can understand complex requests, maintain context, and deliver responses that feel far more natural.

At the same time, the upgrade introduces new challenges. Alexa+ can be confidently wrong, Follow-Up Mode can misread background conversations, and older Echo devices may feel slower than before.

The result is an assistant that feels much smarter, but not always more reliable. Alexa+ shows the future of AI-powered voice assistants, and that future is exciting. But for now, it also comes with a reminder: when an AI assistant answers with confidence, it is still worth asking whether it is actually right.
