Cambricon Joins PyTorch Foundation as Platinum Member, Strengthening China’s AI Ecosystem
Cambricon has officially joined the PyTorch Foundation as a Platinum member, marking a notable step for the Chinese AI chip company as it deepens its involvement in the global open-source machine learning community.
The announcement was made by the Linux Foundation on September 8 during a major technology gathering in Shanghai that combined KubeCon, CloudNativeCon, the OpenInfra Summit, and the PyTorch Conference China 2026. As part of its new Platinum membership, Cambricon will receive one seat on the PyTorch Foundation Governing Board and one seat on the Technical Advisory Council.
This move gives Cambricon a stronger voice in the future development of PyTorch, one of the world’s most widely used frameworks for artificial intelligence, deep learning, and machine learning research. PyTorch is heavily used by developers, academic researchers, cloud providers, and AI hardware companies to build and train advanced models.
Cambricon’s participation is especially significant as demand grows for AI chips, machine learning infrastructure, and locally developed computing platforms. By joining the PyTorch Foundation at the highest membership tier, the company is positioning itself closer to the center of open-source AI development, where hardware and software collaboration is becoming increasingly important.
The event also saw Alibaba Cloud join the PyTorch Foundation as a Platinum member, while Ant Group entered at the Gold level. Their participation highlights the growing role of major Chinese technology companies in shaping open-source AI tools and cloud-native infrastructure.
For Cambricon, the new membership could help improve collaboration between its AI processors and the PyTorch software ecosystem. Stronger alignment with PyTorch may make it easier for developers to optimize machine learning workloads on Cambricon hardware, potentially improving performance, compatibility, and adoption across AI applications.
The PyTorch Foundation, which operates under the Linux Foundation, was created to support the long-term growth, governance, and sustainability of the PyTorch project. With Cambricon now joining its leadership structure, the foundation gains another major participant from the AI hardware sector.
