Proton-CachyOS Update Makes AMD FSR 4 Easier to Use in DLSS-Only Games on Linux
Linux gaming continues to improve, and the latest Proton-CachyOS update is especially good news for AMD GPU users. A new change now allows Proton-CachyOS to automatically download and generate the NVIDIA DLSS DLL files needed by Optiscaler, making it much easier to enable AMD FSR 4 in games that previously only offered DLSS support.
For players on Linux, getting upscaling technologies working has often required extra manual steps. Users sometimes had to copy DLL files, adjust launch options, or restart games multiple times just to make compatibility tools detect the right components. This update removes much of that hassle by automating a key part of the setup process.
The issue affected users trying to run Optiscaler with FSR 4 upgrade options. In some games, the required DLSS-related files were not being created automatically. Without those files, Optiscaler had nothing to connect to, which meant FSR 4 could not be activated in titles that only displayed NVIDIA DLSS as an upscaling option.
With the new Proton-CachyOS fix, the compatibility layer can now handle those files automatically. It can download and generate important DLSS components such as nvngx_dlss.dll, nvngx_dlssd.dll, and nvngx_dlssg.dll. These files are commonly used by games that support DLSS upscaling, ray reconstruction, or frame generation.
Once those files are available, Optiscaler can intercept the DLSS calls made by the game and redirect them toward AMD’s FSR 4 implementation. In simple terms, this allows AMD users to access FSR 4 through a game’s DLSS pathway, even when the game does not offer a native FSR 4 option.
This is a meaningful improvement for Linux gamers because many modern PC games include DLSS support but do not always provide the same level of support for AMD upscaling technologies. As a result, AMD GPU owners can be left without comparable image upscaling or performance-enhancing options. Proton-CachyOS and Optiscaler help bridge that gap by making more games compatible with FSR 4.
The update should also make the overall process more user-friendly. Instead of manually preparing DLL files or experimenting with different launch configurations, users can rely on Proton-CachyOS to create the necessary setup in the background. That means less troubleshooting and more time spent actually playing games.
For Linux users with AMD graphics cards, this Proton-CachyOS update is another sign that the platform is becoming more flexible and capable for modern gaming. By improving support for FSR 4 in DLSS-only titles, it expands upscaling options, improves accessibility, and helps bring a smoother gaming experience to more players.
